Default cracked frame

recently I put Prothane polyurethane bushings on the front sway bar and end links on my 2500, well I torqued the drivers side sway bar bracket and my buddy over torqued the passenger side , which i didn't know that he did'nt know how to properly use a torque wrench. So now there is a crack about 2 inches long coming from the over torqued bolt hole running towards the front of the truck, the same direction as the frame. will I be able to weld a plate and completely cover this cracked area and remount the sway bar through the welded on plate. would this be structurally sound

this is the steel frame youre talking about?.. and buddy overtorqued it and cracked the metal.. does not sound plausible.. but you say it happened that way. so .. Oo.

you cant just weld on a piece of metal.. unfortunately there are some strict rules about modifying the frame of a vehicle.

if its running along the 'grain' of the frame.. you cant fix that easily either. talk to a bodyshop and see what they would suggest.

Welding a plate over the crack is a bad idea, you need to chase the crack out to keep it from propogating. You need to 'chase' it out by grinding the leading edge out and weld repairing it. Don't add too much heat at one time while welding or you could warp the frame. One you have completely weld repaired the frame, you could weld a plate over it if it makes you feel better, but you should need to.

Thats what i have heard also. But on a side note to that, you also need to have the friend that did it standing close to you while welding it. After welding is complete you need to take the handle (doesn't matter if your welding stick or mig) and smack him upsidethe head with it. Then he wont want to break your truck anymore! well it may be coincidence that it split with the 'grain' from the same bolt that was over torqued, dunno, but it is definately a 2 1/4" crack with some nice corrosion. So from what ya'll are saying it doesn't sound like I'm totally F'ed. cuz this is my first pick up and it's by far my favorite vehicle to date, would be a shame to lose it.
thank you
