Default how big of a winch do I need?

Ok so all of you guys who have or had winches on their trucks, I need to know how big of one should I get? I just came across a pretty good deal for a mile marker 8000lb. I dont know if that would be enough for my truck if I really got it stuck. Oh if it helps I have a 2001 ext cab 4x4 with the 5.9.

i would have to say that that winch would do just fine. not going to be overpowering (ripping the truck out) in pulling the truck out but it should get the job done rather nicly

I wouldn't get a 8k. Rule of thumb is 1.5x your fully loaded weight. If you plan on getting stuck, 2x your weight. I have a short cab, short box, never fully loaded and got a 9k. It works pretty decent but I don't bury the tires in mud here, just rocks. I usually don't need too much to get me out of situations. If I did, I would go with the 12k or 15k. I think an 8k would be fine on a light truck or Jeep but not a full sized rig. (unless it's for the occasional street emergency which, you could pull someone out with a strap for a lot less $).

If you get stuck make it close to a tree.
The more line you let out the less pulling force the winch Has Because the pulling reel gets smaller.
So if you live in an erea where there isnt much to hook up to Get a more powerfull winch.

8k is kinda low, especially for a Mile Marker. IMO Warn is the only way to go, and you pay for it. Mile Marker, Ramsey, Chicago Electric, ect all pull exactly what they're rated for...and not a pound more. They're VERY slow and underpowered and not ballsy at all. I know people who have all of the above and the Warns by far kick the crap out of them. They're fast a hell, and they can pull m ore then rated, you can beat them up and they keep begging for more. The cheaper ones barely preform in regular situations.

Just my opinion though.

yeah did a search after a preemptive post I realized that 8klbs is too little. I wouldnt be doing anything to serious maybe just stuck in the mud. I really dont know why I would get one now I couldnt even mount it up w/o getting a different front bumper first.

I ran 8,000 on CJ's
On your Dodge I would run a 12,000 for single line or get a realy good snach block for the 8,000 so you can double line it.
Twice I had to double line the 8,000 on the CJ 7 and it is a lot lighter than you Dodge.
On one truck that I had set up for some serious off road I had a 20,000 pto tulsa (from a 6x6) on the front and 12,000 Ramsey elect on the tail
