Default Will it fit?

My truck has the overhead console with no computer. If I get one is there a connector for it up in the headliner someplace? Will I need to get the outside air temp sensor and where does it mount? Would I need to get a entire new console or just the computer part and mount it to mine?

my 99 ram had the console.. my 01 doesnt.. so iwent on a search and destroy mission.. in the headliner.. it does NOT have the right harness.. you could get one for it however.. under the dash.. theres more plugs in this thing to make the fuel economy guage.. etc work.. the wiring already goes from the computer to under the hood... but it stops just short of the hood light.. you will look and see a plug for it.. that plug thats not got anything in it is for the temp sensor.. the temp sensor mounts on the hood itself.. just behind the grill around the latch.. if i remember right its got a bracket that mounts to the latch.. but it will take some homework.. and prolly the best way is to find a buddy with a ram thats got all of that.. so you can see what all you need to hook up.. it can be done im sure.. but i opted not to mess with it...

Please keep us posted on your search! I'm looking to do the same thing. Have you discovered anything new?

Default RE: Will it fit?

I just recently purchased a 2001 Dodge Ram 4x4 Club Cab with 5.9.

It only had the dual upper console lights in the upper overhead console with sunglass holder. I want all the features available when possible so, I went to the wrecking yard and purchased one that had the built-in odometer/mileage/mpg/dte/compass/temp. It was quite an endevour removing without destroying the console. NOTE: IT IS VERY VERY DIFFICULT to remove this console without possibly damaged/destroying it. I didn't do any damage but, it was amazingly difficult to remove! There are two retainers behind the garage door opener section that once pulled back will not yield the result of the console coming loose. It just is stubborn as all get out! Keep in mind that the console needs to slide back/rearward to come off where it is hooked. Getting the wiring out from behind the ceiling headliner/sidepose/dash wasn't an easy task either, saving the wiring and anchors. Dodge put these wire anchors every 6 inches (sheesh!!). Be assured you WILL end up with scratched up hands, if not bleeding when finished. Getting the brown connector removed from the backside of the fuse block was VERY VERY difficult to reach and disconnect. It takes squeezing the little bump of the connector in the inside facing rear of vehicle) to remove it. There was another small white connector I removed behind the emergency brake pedal on another big connector with a clump of wires. This wiring harness I removed included the lighted visor mirrors, auto dimming rear view mirror, and console light, as well of course the display unit computer unit. I would recommend saving ALL the wiring with clips AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. A wrecking yard truck can be crushed the next day so, damage the donor truck and not the wiring you remove! It may be just a thing with me but, I like to retain original wiring configurations. You'll appreciate it later! (I SHOULD MENTION: Earller that day I removed the VERY SAME upper console/mpg/compass/temp display out of another Ram and realized it WAS NOT the same design/color at all. It was smaller, stuck out more compared to the more slim-line 98-2001 model. The older one mounted with screws on one end and the wiring harness/connectors were TOTALLY different! Pay attention to what you have in your truck before you pull one of these out of another truck! I don't remember what year it was but, it was older than the 98' that I removed the correct console/harness that fit 2001.)
Anyway, I also got the dash bezel at the same time for $15 for both. I got home, disconnected both connectors underneath and connected the unit. The unit powered up, showed mileage mpg, and compass etc, except temp, which shows C0. Truck was facing West and the compass shows NW. I'm thinking the compass will need to be aligned/setup or something; gotta figure that part out yet. Maybe the correct button press/reset will work.

I know now since reading above where to look for the temp sensor and will also look for lighted visors since the visors on that truck were rusted from being submerged. The lighted visors in the truck I removed this console out of was a flood victim from Louisianna. The Console was riddled with a muddy dust so I'll probably remove it/open it up to clean it before installing permanentally. Also, after a couple failed attempts I got a cable, not broken for the club cab inside door handle. That takes some special attention to NOT break. Seems to be a design problem there. That engineering makes me laugh sometimes. The push-button switches for the upper console are very poorly designed and fell apart on my truck and on the one from the wrecking yard so I'm using the switches I got today out of another truck's console, similar to the older one (94-97??). The switches from the older ones are better quality. That one had no computer stuff in it. I'm selling the older uncompatible unit on ebay later on.

I'll install the wiring and put up this console and look for another Dodge vehicle that has the temperature sensor/transmitter, and lighted mirrors. This truck only had one mirror, passenger side which was falling into itself and looks quite sad for some reason. Not that I need to look at myself and illuminated but, it's just a little feature nice to have since wrecking yard upgrade parts are so nice and cheap!
