Default 5.7 Plug n play

Has anyone considered or used the new Mopar 5.7 Plug-n-Play Hemi crate motor in their older Ram? I'm just at 110,000mi on my 96 1500, but am having some heating up problems I can't seem to solve and thought maybe this would be an alternative to buying a new truck.

I saw it last month in Hot Rod (I think). They put a 5.7 hemi in a 1970 Duster. Neat article. I also thought about that instead of a new truck. My 1996 5.2L 4X4 has 157,000 miles on it. Still runs great, but you never know.

Let me know if you see anything on a hemi install in a 2nd gen.

Funny you saw it in a Duster as I am currently prepping a 71 Duster to do a rotisserie resto and considered going that route for the engine. I'd sure be interested in seeing that article. Of course I'd have to think very hard as I have the 440 setting heredeciding onupgrades & planning on dropping it in the Duster.

A 5.7L in a 2nd gen would be one formidable force.......................

why not throw a 5.9 in there. with my mild mild mods i already stomp the heck out of any stock hemi ram (even short cab short bed 4x2s) imo the 5.9 is a better motor, which is part of the reason i bought one. besides, for the 5k+ you spend on the crate and accessories to make it work you could have a good 400 horse 5.9.

agreed, plus as far as i know, the hemi would not be so much plug-n-play with your current computer systems...you'd have loose ends up the ying-yang. i'd start off by figuring out the cooling problem and go from there...just my .02

It happens to have the 5.9 already & a few mods over the the 110,000mi life of the truck. Like mopar performance computer, M1 intake, 160 stat, polished throttle body. I was just was thinking outloud, I'm about to tear into the water pump because thats the only thing I haven't replaced in the cooling system, but I'm thinking while I'm that close I might go in & change the timing chain & put in a 4 degree cam offset. Of course theres a temptation to keep going & change the cam, but then I would have to consider some Hughes heads & before ya know it I'll be into a full blown rebuild. The thing I find unusual about the heating up is it mostly does it while I'm at highway speeds & comes back down when slowing & stopped. It especially acts up when I pull a trailer. I sometimes wonder how hot it actually is& replaced the sending unit, but that didn't change anything. By the time I slow down to check the actual temp, it has cooled down.

are you sure its actually heating up, and not just the guage? if you can afford it, or have the inclination to do so,think about investing inan aftermarket guage to monitor temp. Heating at highway speeds is odd for any vehicle, the wind alone usuially can cool you down very easily.

(if you do decide on the hemi, i want that m1 )
