Default Over Drive Switch faulty??

Howdy!

I've got a '98 with the 5.9. The third day I had my truck, last Sunday, the end of the shift lever kinda popped off. It was still haning on by the wires to the over drive button. I pushed it back on, but now the O/D Off light comes on when I put it into park and reverse. It also may or may not come on when I shift into drive.

My question is this, does the light indicate that the O/D is really off or is there a connection between the little problem of a loose shift lever **** coming off? Should I worry about this? Should I take it into to the dealer?

Thanks for any help!

I believe the light fires off the comm bus. A signal is sent from the pcm to the dash control. The o/d switch sends a ground pulse to the pcm that toggles o/d on and off, so, if I had to guess, I would say that you have a wire shorting out in the steering column somewhere.
