just got a ram
Hi guys this is my first dodge i like it so far 2000 ram 1500 4 door 4x4 id like to put some bigger tires on it . it has 245/75/16 on it now what size can i go up too ? And i herd the tans in these trucks arnt too good it has 112,000 on it should i have the trans looked at ?
my tires are 285/75/16
i guess 33 would be the limit i would try on mine.
also depends on the engine mines a 5.2 Liter
so, i wouldn't go any bigger than a 33 unless you have the 5.9 Liter
just my opinion.

Howdy! I had 285x75x16's on my 98 Ram 4x4 when I got it. They were really in bad shape and they also rubbed in tight turns, like into my driveway. Anyway I bought 4 new tires at Pep Boys in 265x75x16 and they are fabulous! They had a special on "Buy 3 get 4th Free" but that promotion was over yesterday.

People just like to moan about the trans in the rams. If your doing some towing or heavy payloads, maybe look into a after market trans cooler. I have 132,000+ and no major work needed, other than a plenum gasket replacement.I have had to replace the speed sensor on my trans, when i gave it dirt it would kind of slip it felt like, since the new sensor no problems. Get some magnetic drain plugs for oil and trans and you'll be fine. Also, turn off the overd rive when towing, helps keep the life of the trans.
I wouldn't pay some one to look at your trans if you don't feel some thing wrong. Most people are shandy and will just tell you it needs work when it really doesn't. Even then if you do need a rebuild take time in finding a reputable place, too many shoddy mechanics helps paint the ram into a bad picture. If they can take you for a $2500 trans job once, good chance they will try again with "forgetting" to do some thing.

I don't know if your wheel openings or backspacing is any different from a 95 but I had 305/70/16s on mine with no problems.

thanks for the info guys this is a cool forum , ur truck looks good with those tires on it thanks for the picmine looks kind of funny with the stock tires there is like a foot and a half gap as far as my trany goes it shifts good but it shifts into third quick and rite into over drive if im not into the gas not sure if that is normal or not but the fluid is clean and smells good and i looked at the pan it dosnt look like any one has change it lately so maybe its fine
I would have a shift kit installed. You will have firmer shifts and will extend the life of your tranny. As for tires i believe a 305/70-16 or 285/75/16 will be as big as you can go without rubbing anything.
