Default Suggested Performance Mods

Hey guys,

I'm looking into getting some new parts added to my truck to increase its power; it has been feeling a bit gutless lately. Anyway I was really thinking about gettinga cam but I really don't know a lot about them. Can I get just a cam from like KRC performance or do I need to have some other work done first? And what types of gains do you think i'll be looking at after I get one installed?

I wasalso considering a Mopar PCM if I'm able to find one. Would thisbe a good idea?

Thanks a lot

Cam will require springs, hardened pushrods (not a must, but probably best), lifters (again). Lots of mods you can do for more power. Good search terms:

B&G flash
cam
roller rockers
intake
intake manifold
electric fans
exhaust
headers
throttle body
fastman
pulleys
ignition
heads
stroker
induction
boost
supercharger

Probably best to get an idea of what you want to do, and then ask about those particular mods. Hope this helps

Power will only drop off if its in need of maintenace. Adding mods could compound or mask the issues. I would check a few things first beforeadding lots of mods
Is it
Feeliing guttless lately cause it needs a tune up?
Using more oil cause the plenum gasket under the beerbarrel is leaking?
Do you still have the factory cat in the truck and have you heard any rattles on cold start ups?

Well, the truck actually has never had a real tune-up. I'm definitely planning on taking it in sometime next week; is there anything specific I should tell the dealership to look at? It only has 40,000 miles so I'm not extremely concerned.

And it still has the factory cat. Whenever I'm at like 60 MPH and just punch it then it really rattles from under the passenger side of the truck; I'm assuming the cat is causing this. I just figure it wasn't clogged since my truck seems to have a lot of low end but once I get past 60 then it seem so behave sluggishly. I hope that you guys can help me fix this.

Thanks a lot

screw the dealer... get a set of MSD 8.5 super conductor wires, autolite 3923's and mopar cap & rotor slap them in there then make sure your air filter is clean, if not swap it out too... then go get the cat replaced. you hear it rattle, so it's broke internally and it needs to be changed. that is probably why it's sluggish.

once your done... K&N fipk is a good choice for intake kit IMO, then a 52mm fastman TB, flowmastercat back & shorty headers (simple install). change your timing chain to a double roller one then you should be pretty good to go for now. if you want to upgrade the pcm or do a flash on it wait until you have all your mods so you can get the pcm tune to match your setup.

Well thank you very much for the suggestions. And you definitely have the same ideas I do; if you check my sig I actually already have flowmaster exhaust and a K&N I'll definitely try to do it myself I just figured there might be more to it..

Anyway speaking of flowmasters... I noticed flowmaster released the 44 series recently. My truck has the 50 series and although it's loud, it definitely could be louder. Do you think the 44 would solve this? lol... or should i forget about it?

forget about modding the exhaust then... get the fastman & headers... and since you have a 4x4... make sure your output of the flowmaster is not greater than 3.0 for a single or 2.25 for duals... you'll loose too much part throttle low end torque if the exhaust is open too much. keep the stock exhaust size from the heads to the input of the flowmaster... if you add the headers, make sure you keep the size the same. this will keep your exhaust velocity consistant thru the exhaust system.

My .02
Screw the dealer, go Napa brass cap n rotor.
Taylor 8.2 wires
If you hear any knock/ping while climbing grades or accellerating loaded then go with the Autolite 3923, no knock/ping, stick with the stock 3924s (if there aint a problem/dont fix it IMHO)
Of course clean the air filter and if its a 14"rnd while its off (engine off) open tb butterflies and look down (use a mirror) and see if there is pooling oil at the back of the manifold (thin film normal/lots of oil isnt) Plenum gasket leaks can cost power as well as mileage.
Replace the cat with a Magnaflow hi flow cat and ypipe. Dont need to change your exhaust behind the cat. The hi flow cat will give the exhaust a deep/louder tone (similar to adding headers) Should see a very good power increase just by doing the above. Not enough power or exhaust still not loud enough then get a set of headers

Link below for the cat/ypipe at summit.

I had a brass cap & rotor 1x and it wore out faster than the mopar ones, that's why I recommended it. I also had an MSD ingition installed which may have had something to do with it.

3923's are said to give up to 5 extra ponies... IIRC, dyno proven.
