dual exhaust
I have a questiong regarding exhaust. I've seen so many people on here buy and install exhaust sys. that split after the muffler making it a half breed dual sys. I was wondering if it wouldn't be better as far as gains in HP and TQ by making it a "true" dual exhaust sys by removing the Y-pipe and running your 2.5" pipe up the the exhaust manifold? Would there be a problem running two cats " if you can hook up the O2 sensors? Wouldn't the power of low end TQ be better with true duals? Whats yall's opinion on this? Thanks
reloader, that's basically what I did. I ran 2 cats, 2 mufflers no crossover pipe yet. I just kept the O2's on the pasenger side. The truck does run strong but can only read O2 level's from the passenger side. I am going to change this eventually by putting in crossover's before and after and putting the O2's in the crossovers. Jeff.
It may be better to read one bank than to move the forward o2 sensor too far back in the exhaust stream. You could weld another bung on the driver side and swap the o2 sensor back and forth for tuning purposes. An x dynos better than a crossover.
this true dual exaust setup your thinking of is the ideal setup, but your looking into alot more money then just "y"ing it after the muffler or running a dual outlet muffler..almost twice the money. Also, it is better to run the02 senser onjust one side, then to run the 02 senser in the crossover pipe, becuase the 02 senser will not be reading the correct a/f ratio.
With the stock y, you read both banks (mixed together). The upstream sensor needs to be close enough to the header/manifold so it will be properly heated, and maintain accurate readings. If you try to do an aftermarketcrossover or an x on our trucks, and try to install the o2 sensor after that, then you will get false readings. It will be too far back from the heads. It is best to read one bank at a time,or to get a Ca box and monitor two banks.
Thanks for the info fellas. I've been use to building dirt track engines on hobby and super stock class and outlaws,so I was trying to apply what "know how" I have to my trucks' exhaust sys. Does anybody other than jram99 have a true dual? What performance gains did you reach that you know of? The reason I'm asking this is because I don't want to spend money on something when I can build it myself and do it the right way and get more for my money. I can put true duals on, but if its not goning to give me the greater gains over say a cat-back split tail sys then I'm just going to go with the cat-back sys with the split tail or dual tail. What do yall think?

next question! NO CATS? Do you not run into any problems without them, like sensor problems? I had a 97 grand cherokee with a 5.2 and with no cat in it, it ran like crap HP and TQ droped b/c of pcm not reading O2 sensors right. Anyways, if I go with stock manifolds right now and D/C the Y-pipe and run 2.25" pipes all the way back with two FM 50's (for instance) and without cat(s), would I have any problems that yall know of with sensors and ect? If I did put say a carsound cat in both sections of pipe (seprate from eachother) how would I tie in the second cats O2 sensors since it plugs in to one pigtail? Do I split the pigtail and tie into it or what? IndyRamMan, I like your setup. I don't won't to run a 10 b/c I do a lot of huntin' and don't want to scare everything into the next county. lol. I, but without cats have you had any problems with sensors? I know you said you can really tell a diff. I'm just wondering how much of a diff you can tell b/w the two setups I've mentioned. Something else I'm thinking about is just not even putting a muffler back on and just leave the cat on and split after that cat. That would be less restriction and I'm sure that the cat will muffle the sound ok. What do yall think?
without a muffler and just the cat it'll be loud as shi*.....and you'll lose low end torque depending on if you just keep the stock pipes. As far as the sensors, as long as you keep the upstream o2 sensor in the stock or closer to the header it'll still read everything it needs to. But the after cat o2 sensor will set your cel light. You can get an 02 simulator to fix this issue.
