Probabily because the dakota was a cheeper platform(durango), or possibly there was a ram plant in europe, but none for dakotas.
though there was one at carlisle, it was black. i wanted to die cuz it looked bad. thats also another possibility, americans may not like it.

dodge probably didn't think there was a large enough market for a full size suv when the durango was doing so well for them in the united states. The us gets shafted in alot of vehicles....especially imports. Like the type r civics, skylines, some audis, newer vw pickups....nissan 240sx (****ty motor in the us) a couple of other vehicles that i can't think of....
I owned 2 RC'ers. An 83 4WD and an 88 2WD. Loved them both. I think the Durango and the fact that the RC was only a 2dr had a lot to do with Dodges decision to not offer the 2nd Gen model in the US. The ones I've seen from Mexico look great. I really wish they would have made a CTD 4 door 3/4 ton model.
The reason why these were never offered in the US is because of emissions and crash safety. These didnt meet the strict US crash requirements and thus were regulated to Mexico....
They do look nice, and I'm sure they would have sold well.......look at the full size Tahoe Blazer that Chevy sold....it was a 2dr SUV built on a full size pick up truck chassis. I wanted one of those for years, still do actually....with a CTD in it

I don't think emissions or safety had anything to do with it. After-all these trucks were built in Mexico just like mine and many other's trucks.
This is the info I've found so far.

A second generation Ramcharger was produced in Mexico based on the second generation Ram pickup in 1999 (it was not marketed for the U.S. market), however, the model never enjoyed the sales of the first generation Ramcharger and was discontinued around 2002. One of the most interesting features of this generation was a small folding seat in the cargo area, facing sideways, not a full-sized seat, making it uncomfortable for long trips.
Why the Mexican-market Ramcharger was not marketed in the U.S. - DaimlerChrysler had two profitable mid-sized SUVs (Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango); the SUV market was favoring 4 or 5-door SUVs as opposed to 2-doors (2-door SUV sales have been declining to which GM ended production of its 2-door Tahoe and Yukon).
