Default oil filter

Last night I changed my oil. I drained out 5 quarts but there was no oil in the filter. Has anyone seen this before? What could be the reason?

What do you mean by no oil?
Does this mean it was dry like new, cause this is not likely.

do you mean while you were taking of your oi filter no oil drained out, and there was no oil in your oil filter? or when you were taking off your oil filter there was oil draining out of the treaded hole, but there was not an abduntent(sp?) amount of oil in the filter? if tthe first case, your oil pump is probably going bad. If the second case, it's nothing abnormal. Since the oil filter sits horizontally and not vertically.

I think we would rather he elaborate, not exaggerate.

where i work i've seen this 3 times in the last 2 years, (all fram filters btw)every time it meant a new engine.1 of the times when i pulled the drain plug...all that came out was SMOKE, not a drop of oil in the engine []

edit: i'm not saying the filter was the problem every time, just an observation. but please people, use a decent oil filter.

that 1 time you pulled the drain plug and all came out was smoke ...this the filter fault ? or the person that dont check the oil...at that point doesnt matter what oil filter is on if there is no oil to filter..

That sounds more like someone had a ****ing hole in their oil pan or something crazy.
Anyways if you run your finger along the inside of the filter and it's bone dry you're gonna have a bad time. Check your pan and the plug and the seals and the pump. what does your oil pressure guage read when the truck is on?

the 1 time i pulled the plug & got smoke, it was owner negligence. they hadn't had the oil changed in almost 42,000 milesand probably never checkedthe level in that time either[:-]...the guy thought he'd be nice and change the oil before he sold the car ...i feel really bad for whoever bought that car...1987'ish Ford Escort

funny thing is...when it came into the shop it was clanging and making all kinds of engine noise...when it left it sounded smooth as a new car.
