Default How can I tell if the Plenum is leaking

I did a search and read many of the posts, however most seemed related to replacing the gasket.

I am wondering how to tell if I am leaking or not ??

I do burn oil, I do not notice any pinging at all, ever. Unless it is so minor that I can not hear it.

I took my air filter etc off to clean it and took a look down the chambers in the throtle body. There isa littlegrime in there under the driver side port only, and it looks like there might a thin film of something. There is also some carbon build up which I will spray out.

Also, the pan looks like it might already be aluminum, it does not look like tin, however I wont know for sure I guess until I take it apart.

The truck has 285,000 km on it, no idea if the gasket has ever been replaced, so I will likely rip it apart anyway, I just want to get an idea of how critical it might be to get it done.

yank off the TB and use a flashlight & mirror to check all 4 corners of the bottom of the intake. a light film is normal and I wouldnt waste time or energy trying to clean that, if you see oil pooling on the bottom, you have a leak.

glad to help...

if it is blown, make sure you get an aluminum plenum pan if you dont already have one. plus there is the "new" DIY thread tacked to the top of the forum which has a link to the plenum replacement writeup...

I saw your write up some time ago when I bought the truck. I printed for future reference. I also just visited the latest DIY and saw the post. It's great. I have had to do so much work to it lately I really don't want to rip into this but I think I will. Good time to change my hoses, thermostat, cap rotor etc. Like I said in my first post, it might be aluminum already, sure doesn't look or sound like tin.

I am going to look tomorow though, and see, monday might be another greasy day.
