the motor problems can all be worked out... the biggest problems are the heads & plenum... the block is pretty solid if taken care of.

well we checked all the grounds, wiring back to the pcm & swapped out the pcm with a known good one... (just to add to what we did earlier...)

tonight we yanked out the dist to change the pickup coil and the pickups in the dist were broken & cracked... 1 of them we found under the distributor and another broke off when we yanked the distributor... we'll be getting one tomorrow to swap in... I'll let you guys know how it goes.

thanks for all the input!!

Hello Steve, I'm new to the forum but not to working on things. I have just been working on a 1996 Z71 that wouldn't crank. I also have a 1988 chevy of my own that I have had to replace the fuel pump more than once. You had said that you had 12lbs of fuel pressure was this @ the schrader valve? The reason I ask is because the 1996 I worked on said that the psi @ the vale should be 60psi.

Hey Jerry, Welcome to DF...

the motor is a TBI motor and the fuel pressure needs to be between 9 & 13 psi, we measured 12.5. there is no schrader valve on this setup, we had to buy a kit that had an adapter in it for the fuel filter output to measure the pressure. Your '96 has the vortec motor which has a higher pressure system in it, your '88 will have the same specs as ours...

We did find the problem, the distributor pickups around the coil inside the distributor were cracked & broken, apparently water will get past the weather strip on the firewall and dump right onto the distributor. Over time the guts will rust out and break. We swapped in another one yesterday and it's back to running right.

thanks to everyone for their input, greatly appreciated.
