Default 4 Low gone

I was trying to pull a boat out of the water and put my truck into 4 low. I heard/felt a little pop and then I had no 4 low gear. As near as I can tell, 4 high is still working. Anyone have any idea what happened and how expensive this is going to be?

I've never really used 4LO. I read in the manual to roll forward 1-3 mph and then place the tranny in neutral and do a firm and complete shift. Mine gets it fine. When you say gone, is there any response at all with movement or clicking or grinding, or do you have 2LO and just have problems with the front axle engaging?

BTW, does anyone know why when the T-case is in neutral and the tranny is in park there is a loud grinding? My friend did this on his truck and I don't want to do this to mine. Because if the T-case is in neutral, then any position that the tranny is in shouldn't matter.

Back on topic, hopefully someone will be able to help you. Whenever I've heard of anyone having trouble with the T-case, they usually end up getting one from the junk yard for about $1,000. Hopefully someone will be able to help you out. If you end up changing it, they're very easy to swap. I've done them a couple times and they are much easier than a transmission as they sit in the open. Good luck!

DO NOT pay that much, you shouldn't pay over $150 for a used one. I just sold the one from my Jeep, (also a NP231 but a little different) for $75. You should be able to find one for 100-150.

But first off 95% chance your t-case is fine. Its probably just the linkage that slipped a little. Its not to hard to check. Crawl under and look on the drivers side of the tcase towards the front of it, you'll see the linkage there. You can usually see a spot on the adjustment bar where is looks like and new/clean if it's slipped. Thats where you can adjust it, the reason the metal looks new/clean is becuase its been protected from the elements.

You'll see what I mean when you crawl under. Any questions take some pics and post back here. Don't take it to a shop or the dealer, they're trick you into buying a new tcase instead of doing what you say and checking the linkage.

Thanks, Socha. That's good to know. I have a buddy with a 1996 Chevrolet and he's had 2 T-cases and paid $1000/each. Good to know that they're cheaper.
