Rear gears
Well I got my 4.56's and rearend rebuild kit in the other day and the more I think about the more I crinch thinking about paying somebody else to intall them. So I've decided to do it myself hopefully this weekend. I haven't done much work on a rearend so any tips or pointers so of you more experienced folks out there could give me would be great. Anybody that is just gonna say let somebody else do it don't bother. I enjoy my learning experiences with my beast. I figure the best way to learn is to just get down there and do it.
^^^LOVE that attitude! You'll never learn anything and always go broke letting someone else do your repairs. Wish I had some info for ya, got a lot of shade-tree experience, just notmuch with diffs (yet). Check this link:

Even when you add in the price of any special tools you need (for most projects) you generally come out well ahead in overall price, not to mention the un-priceable boost in pride.

i just dove in and did mine myself too, putting 4.56's in my 9 1/4. for tools you'll need a dial indicator and torque wrench that'll measure the pinion load (you probably knew that) and you'd be well off making up a tool for the side adjusters for the diff carrier bearings, i believe the size is 1 7/16" and weld that to a rod with another bolt on the outside. MUCH easier with this tool! a good resource for general gear setup, etc i found was the yukon gear install instructions, you can find them on their website. there are also diff-specific instructions around, and i'd read both. good luck! (btw, mine haven't exploded yet...first time doing gears for me too.)
Nahh so far I have been to cheap to by a camera. I prefer to sink my money in my gas guzzler and gas saver (95 maxima). And pushing 274,xxx miles Their are alot of parts to check and replace just from wear and tear. Last summer I went through almost the entire front end and now I am ready to start on the axles. Hopefully by tax time I will have enough money to overhaul the engine. I figure I should be at 300,000 miles by then and I can say I got my money's worth.
