my gears SUCK!!!
I have a 00 ram 4dr with a 360 along with 3.55 gears front and back. I HATE THEM!!!! I was pullin' my 2 horse bumper pull trailer over the weekend, running around 3k lbs at least with 2 horses, up and down hills. I was having to drop my tranny into 2nd gear at times. Keep in mind, I pull my horses easy meaning not jerking them around in the trailer. I'm wanting to drop my gears to 4.11 in front and rear. By the way, I'm running 285 75 16 which is a 33' tire but that shouldn't keep me from pullin' that bad. I don't know. In a lot ways I wish I'd have bought me a diesel. What do yall that do ANY towing have to say about this??? By the way, I'm going to get me a superchip for this thing. A guy I know said, that upgrade ALONE is the best that you can do for the money. He got about 15% more hp and about 10% TQ without changing anything else. So that would be my next option. So, help me out folks.

Saying your fuel ecomony will suffer is really 6 of one, half dozen of another.
With 4.10s your RPM will be higher, yet your engine won't be working as hard. With the 3.55s you have lower RPM but your engine is working really hard and the PCM is actually dumping extra fuel in to compensate for the extra load.

Pulling anything over a 1000 lbs really sucks with 3:55s...I'll second that....errrr make that my second tranny. You can never use OD, so your mileage is crap anyway. Gears will put your motor back in the powerband at highway speeds, and your tranny will thank you.
4.10s or even 3.92s will help.

well, I need something of that nature in my rear end and front end. I'm wanting to get a 3 slant horse trailer with tach room and dressing room. That will be a 12 to 14 foot trailer excluding the tounge length vs my 10 foot trailer I have now (excluding tounge length). That means a trailer (empty) wt will be around 3 to 4 thousand lbs then you put 2 or 3 1000 to 1300 lb horses in there, well, yall see what I'm getting at. Do yall think the 4.11 will be my better bet? I don't thing putting 3.91 is going to make that much of a diff. I may be wrong, but why not go with 4.11 since 3.91 is so close? Anyways, I think the gear change and superchips upgrade will be a great combo what do yall think?

how often do you tow? also if your looking at a new traler maby have a look at a 5th wheel there are some with a tack storagr area in the 5th wheel part
if your gonna tow often the id say 4.10 would prob be goot
if u tow once in a blue moon id say prob not
if its 50/50 well then your gonna half to deside if you want it to drive better with the traler (4.10) or without (stay with 3.55)
with your tires your kinda inbetween the gear combos from what i hear 4.10 is best with 35" so youll prob rev a bit higher when driving

reloader77724- I definitely understand how you feel about your truck in regards to towing. I bought my current truck used last summer ( all stock) and it towed my 25ft, 5300# dry weight travel trailer horribly, especially going uphill. I have added some mods to my truck this past year (mods are in my sig) and I'm nowvery pleased with my trucks towing performance as well as its daily driving performance. Changing from 3:55's to 4.10's or 4.56's will definitely help with towing. When towing with OD off, I'm at 3000 RPM's at 65 mph with my 4:56 gears. Cold air intake, exhaust, throttle body, headers, and 1.7 RR's also helped with towing performance. Hope this helps and good luck.

if you spend a lot of time towing thengears may not be a bad way of going, but it will kill your fuel economy when cruising...if you don't want to go right for 4.11's i think some trucks came with 3.91's you might be able to get used?
