engine swap question
i have 99 dodge ram with a 318 and a five speed. The motor is going out do to high miles and using a ton of oil. i was wondering if the 360 will go in the truck with the fivespeed tranny because the trucks did not have this option from the factory. will the motor bolt up to the tranny and will it fit in the stock engine mounts.
If its going through alot of oil its probably the plenum. Alot of people on here have Magnums with 250k + miles on them.
Check the plenum first, if you don't know how just search for it.

The engine swap from the 318 to the 360 will work, but you've some things that you must do in order to make it happen. You must replace the flywheel and crankshaft damper as the 318 and 360 are not interchangeable. Also I highly recommend obtaining the correct 360 PCM for your model truck with manual transmission.
I did the 318 to 360 swap in my 01 with an automatic and all pieces fit nice.
On the other hand, if it is your plenum that is leaking the oil and you're not burning it I would recommend upgrading your 318 as follows instead.
1) Install Harland Sharp 1.7 roller rockers (poor mans camshaft)
2) Install a good cat back exhaust system
3) Install quality headers
4) Replace the stock catalytic converter with a high flow converter like that offered by Magnaflow.
5) Install a quality aftermarket air intake system like the K&N FIPKII or the new round air filter system from Mopar.
6) Replace the stock throttle body with a Fastman 50mm modified one.
7) Install a MSD6 model (performance ignition system)
8) Install a MSD Blaster model coil
9) Install 8mm or 8.5mm performance ignition wires
10) Install Autolite 3923 spark plugs.
The nice thing about all of these items is that they will directly swap over to a 360 should you decide in the future to do the engine swap.
