Covering Tags, why?
I think the biggest thing about tags is that people just don't want others to know where they live. Identity theft sure; buts really takes a bit more info than was is found on tags info. Now if you take the DL no. from the RO via the tags info and had access to that info than you could probaby do some damage. I don't care who see's my tag as well; they don't come back to my house anyways...
Most of the standard reasons for covering up the license plate is for identify theft, security, privacy, but also for knowledge of where you live and so forth. You could have a custom plate that makes identifying your car that much easier or you could have a plate that gives the county you live in. These are all things that can be used to gain information about you. It's different if Joe Schmoe pulls up behind you at a light, they already are living in the area you do. However, if Joe Schmoe on the internet decides he hates you because you made fun of him, any information he can use to find you, hurt you, do damage to you, is just asking for trouble.
I always recommend covering your license plates up in any picture. If you ever take a look at professional car pictures, very rarely will you EVER see a street plate on the car. They'll always put up some advertisement of the company taking the pictures in place of the plate.
