1999 ram fault code 0783
my check engine light came on today. took it to autozone and downloaded code 0783. this is a 3rd to 4th shift error. the truck wont shift to 4th,(overdrive)
i had noticed the problem before it threw the code but thought it was some thing else causing the non-shift.
anyone know anything about fixing something like this? my understanding is that it is controlled by a shift selonoid. how do i change this out, and how difficult is it to do.
thanks

took truck to reputable dodge service garage. they diagnosed same problem, bad 3rd to 4th solenoid. after replacement of solenoid, the problem persisted but eng light went of. they wont know until they further break down transmission.
very expensive propositon when no longer under warrenty. they quoted new trans at $3838.00 plus all the labor charged and such.
truck has less than 53k and this is the 3rd time trans has needed to be worked.
sorry folks, but this is my last dodge of any kind.
they may look pretty in the sales yard but the internal parts are still the same as they always are.
they can't sell them, so thats why the new warrenties say lifetime on the drivetrain and massive insentives and discounts. goto any lot and see for your self.
don't get me wrong, i have owned dodges for the last 20 years and my father owned them as well, (thats why im mechanically inclined, went with the ownership of a dodge)
but a 99 ram with 53K and the tranny 3 times. lemon law or not, never again.
good bye dodge chrysler plymouth, kiss off a former loyal customer.

like i said, i took it to a Dodge dealership garage, a garage that i have been to before and recieved great service from over the years. my beef is not with the garage but the quality of the parts within the truck.
my brother at one time worked in the auto industry for one of the big three as quality control. he explained the concept of QC this way to me.
each of the big three have a very different definition of what quality is.
example; if you have an assembly comprised of several parts and they must all work together to perform a function and your making this assembly from mass produced parts, then all of these parts must be interchangable form one assembly to the next.
well this is not always the case and this is how the big three approch this problem.
GM; if it does't fit, get another part but don't stop production (don't care about interchangability) garbage in, garbage out.
Ford; if it does't fit they want to know why and they go after the subcontractor.
they want good parts in so as to put good parts out.
Dodge; one day they will raise bloody murder on the subcontractors for parts quality and the next they will accept junk. dodge still has no clue as to what they want for quality. therefore some people get lemons and others get oranges.
with this type of quality issues you would think they would warrenty their products somewhat better.
as i stated before, goto a dodge lot these days and look beneith the skin.
why are they using the lifetime warrenty of the drive train as a maketing ploy.
because they can't afford the impending lawsuits and recalls. they can't sell them without massive incentives so sell a warrenty and CYA.
