Default Could use some more fast help ...real fast

Hey all,

I have my electric fans in and the only problem I've got is that I can't find an ignition controlled startupsource.

My fans run constantly and drain the battery.

Does anybody know an easy one? I have triedsplicing into all four wires that come from the wiper motors, but the only one that doesn't immediately turn on the wiperblades makes the fans run full out.

2001 Dodge Ram 1500 if that helps

Thanks Y'all, I'm stuck at work until I hear from somebody.

Oh yeah, I gotta find one under the hood or the wires aren't going to reach

If you can wait until tommorrow I'll tell you which one to use. I have a dual Flex-A-Lite setup with thermostat and AC control. I had a hard time as well but I went inside the cab to a switched fuse link and it works fine. The fan will run for about 30 - 45 sec after turning off the ignition so don't panic. Also if you have a thermostat control you have to play with it to get it adjusted correctly.

Yes,

I can wait. Don't have much ofa choice, hehe. Thanks for the help ahead of time.

I too have a flex-a-lite controller, didn't know they'd run for an extra 30 seconds, but the radio's on even with the key out, so I know that can't be right. I've just taken the negative battery terminal off and I'll put it back on when I need to drive.

Please do get back to me on which spot you tapped into. BTW are you using the splicers that came with the kit? Those things are so tiny, I can't get my fat fingers around them.

Once again thanks. I thought I had researched this one thoroughly enough. Apparently I have not.

Yeah no problem. Believe it or not the hardest part for me was hanging the damn thing on the radiator. It came with enough brackets and I played with it for about an hr. My truck is lifted 6" but the 3" body lift changes things a bit. Is your radio an after market one? If it stays on while the ignition is off then you need to rewire it to a "switched" fuse that is only "hot" when the ignition is on.

Yes, the radio is aftermarket.

Here's what I've got going on.

I have double checked all the wiring (except the + ignition source, of course; don't know what wire to splice.)The LED light on the fan comes on 6 sec after I reconnect the negative terminal on the battery without the key in the ignition. Also, the radio comes on instantly, without the key in the ignition. This leads me to believe there might be more things draining the battery as well.

The A/Cwill control the fans correctly, and thefans alsoswitch on when the coolant heats up as well (with or without the A/C engaged), so the thermo switch seems wired correctly. The fans also stop 30 sec after the engine is off and the key is removed, but the radio stays on???Currently I'm spliced into the green wire that comes from the windshield wiper motors. When I initially thought this was incorrect, I spliced into the other 3, but they all caused the wipers to instantly start working as soon as I reconnected the negative terminal. I thought for sure this would work, as the wipers obviously don't work without the key in the ignition, but apparently I am wrong. Usually I don't have this problem following directions, but man, this one's bugging me.

Sounds to me that you have the fan situation corrected. The led light is supposed to come on and yes the fans kick in when the ac is on regardless of the temp and yes the fans are supposed to run after engine is turned off then they are supposed to turn off. If these actions are occurring then the fan situation is all good. As for the radio this is not as hard as it seems. The first thing you need to do is find the constant "hot" wire for the radio and the "switched hot" wire. The constant is to retain the radio's memory and it has a very minute drain however the switched wire needs to be pliced into a wire or fuse that is at least 15 amps and only gets "hot" when the ignition is turned on. This can be done by having the ignition off and touching a fuse with an electrical test light. If it doesn't lite up the tester then turn on the ignition ( without starting the vehicle) and see if it lites it up. If it does then problem solved, just recconnect the radio's switched hot wire to that fuse and you are in business, it it doesn't light up then pull the fuse to make sure it's not blown because most if not all the fuses in the fuse block with either be constant hot or switched hot except for the spare fuses. Let me know if this helped.

PS I also had this problem with my Jeep Wrangler and it just dawned on me after I reread your reply. When MOPAR wiper motors go out they will continue to stay on regardless. I had to replace my wiper motor in my Jeep but before I could do that I had to remove the fuse that powered them from the fuse box to shut them off and thenplug it back inwhen it rained.

So let me get this straight. If the fuse to the stereo'sswitched hotis blown, it will stay on constantly? The stereo workedfine before (had it for 3 years), it was after my "modding" thatit went haywire.

Maybe I should disconnect the splice to the fans in the morning and see ifthe stereo returns to normal.

I did notice another 10 gauge loop connection on the pos battery terminal. That might be from the aftermarket stereo, because I didn't always have one there. Is it possible that the loop from the stereo and the loop from the fans touching together is allowing the splice way up the line to also power the stereo, as theLED stays on as well? Where shouldIreconnect that stereo loop? Theopposite side of the pos battery will just do the same thing, wouldn't it?
