help with differential?!
About a day ago i had my transmission rebuilt and shift kit put in for about 900 bucks which isn't bad and im loving it. Anyways earlier today on my way to work i attempt to turn around in the opposite direction and i try puting it in reverse and i cant every gear but reverse works so im thinking to my self its most likely my diffrential. im still going in the morning the shop to have them check the tranny. What diffirential should i get? i want that near or about 300 thats can handle my transmission? Also what type of rear end do i have? my trucks a 2001 ram 1500 5.2L
any advice would help

my guess would be the tranny not the rear diff...to see what rearend you have look in your glove box, there should be a sticker in there with a bunch of codes with a discription beside them
rydog,
Your 01 Ram 1500 has a 9.25 Mopar rear axle. It is most likely a 3.55:1 gear ratio. When you say you want to change your differential i am assuming you are looking for a Limited slip differential, or a Locker of some sort.
Unless you are going to be a serious off roader, I would change the differential out to a Detroit Truetrac. it is a gear driven Limited slip differential that will not wear out and will offer great traction in loose dirt, sand, snow and ice. They run about $400.00 for the parts only and plan on spending another $250.00 to have someone do the swap.
If you have a 2wd truck, it is a great time to change out your gear ratio also as it does not cost any extra to do gears at the same time as a carrier (differential). If you have a 4wd, you will have to buy gears and pay labor for both front and rear axles.

The diff wouldn't cause that...EVER...
If it did, you'd hear all sorts of wonderful grinding in both directions.
Go back to the trans shop and tell them to fix it, for free!
As for changing out the diff....you have to be more specific. Because changing out the diff could mean changing gears, or getting a new carrier, or just installing a LSD in the carrier...'
Get some more info and learn how these things work then you can make a decision on what you want. We will then gladly help you decide and point you in the direction of a good choice. This will give you the basics http://auto.howstuffworks.com/differential.htm

Again, more info is needed... Different ratios are "best" depending on what you do with your truck. Like do you tow alot, what size tires, city or highway driving most the the time, ect.
Now, since your truck works in foward gears and just fine and not in reverse, just like I said before, its not your gears. Go get your tranny looked at unless you want to replace the gears for no reason.

Do you mean performance like speed or quick off the line, or gas mileage, or torque for towing? Socha's right, you gotta decide what you want, you won't get all of that in 1 set of gears. If you do a lot of varied driving conditions, stick with the 3.55:1 it's more of a jack-of-all-trades set, that's why it's in there from the factory.
