Default Tell Me About Coils

ok ive got just about everything for a tune-up new brass cap and roter, autolite plugs and MSD 8.5 wires

now im wondering about the coil?

1) should i change it too while im at it?
2) what should i change it to? i asked about the MSD coil and aparentley they only make it untill '96 then dodge changed the plug from a pin style to a blade style anyone else ran into this?
3) ive been reading here and can somone explane to me the MSD blaster 3 coil and system? is this the same as the MSD 6A box or do they work together? whats the benifets/drawbacks? is it worth while? whats the cost for this setup?

thanks

When I got the Blaster 3 I thought it helped to smooth things out. It was very easy to install. The two wires sent to the harness for the factory coil got cut and got rings put on the ends so they could be bolted to the pickups on the new coil. As far as mounting goes, I used two pipe clamps with the screw holes on the one side, and painted them to match my paint, and just uesed the bolts from the factory coil to mount it in place.
PS: i do not have the 6a box, nor any ignition aftermarket box.

you will need this to work with the msd coil Adapter Harness, Adapts ACC-140021 to Dodge Truck/Jeep, Each ....These ACCEL ignition coil adapter harnesses will allow you to connect the coil to the factory wiring harness. The ACCEL ignition coil adapter harnesses include the necessary connectors for a quick and easy installation...... i use the msd coil # 8228...

I've installed the entire MSD 6A ignition system and Blaster2 coil in my 01 Ram. Extremely easy. The System and coil work together to provide multiple sparks to each spark plug at lower RPM's and one full spark at higher RPM's. Stock ignition systems are not as efficient as this upgrade. The stock system always sends one spark to each plug. At high RPM's the stock coil may not fully recharge between firings resuting in a lower voltage spark across the spark plug reducing the efficiency of your fuel burn.

Just by adding the Blaster2 coil you will provide a full spark at low and high RPM's for your engine. The MSD Ignition System is what tells your coil to send multiple sparks at low RPM's.

I've attached some pictures of my install here.

i just installed a 6A system along with the coil that everybody says is for trucks up thru 96..that is not true i called msd and it will work with any late model 2 pin coil connection and msd has its own adapter which is only $21 and if you order it soon msd has a rebate going on..i paid $345 for everything including shipping and i am getting $50 back from the rebate..but for all those that may need th part numbers i will post the ones i got

8228- coil
6200-6A box
32183-black 8.5 wires
8889-harness adapter

I believe the upgraded coil discharges at a higher voltage and is supposed to recharge faster. This would give you less chance for a misfire due to spark loss, and should let you open up the spark gap if you needed to do that. The 6A box is needed to cause the coil and plugs to fire 3 times.

If I understand plugs correctly, it won't give you a "hotter" spark, as the resistor in the plug determines at what voltage the the spark can overcome the gapping, not the coil, but the guys that deal with this more seriously might know more.

I think it's like Viagra for your ignition system. You get a thicker, fuller spark.

You're right about not receiving a hotter spark. What the system does do is give you a 3 full sparks at lower RPM's and will still provide a full spark at higher RPM's. Stock systems provide a standard spark at low RPM's and if your coil has any weakness at all, it will not recharge quick enough to give full sparks at high RPM's. That's where misfires and loss of power come into play.

Just don't add a coil, add the MSD box too if you want better results. I've added justcoils to cars in the past and never could tell a difference.

+1

unless your coil is bad, and you plan on upgrading to the 6a box in the future, just do it anyways.
