Default check engine light, P0442

Hi, the check engine light on my '01 ram came on, I stopped by advance auto parts and they pulled up the code as P0442, evaporative emission control system, small leak detected. I'massuming this is no big deal, we dont have emission testing in MN. But I know that sometimes that check engine light will revert it to a standard fuel/air mix and was wondering if driving around with it on will hurt mileage or run rich/lean perhaps damaging something in the cylinder. They wont reset the light for free and I dont want to drop $100 at the dealership just so they can plug it in and reset it. Thanks for the help in advance.

to reset the pcm just unplug the neg battery cable for a few mins then hook it back up ... this could be nothing more then a gas cap try that .. get a gas cap disconect the battery cable and see if the CEL comes back...

i have a 01 dodge ram and i had a p 0455, gross leak in evap system. the guy i took the car to reset the computer for me for free and told me i could wait 2 yrs to fix it if i wanted to. he didnt have a smoke tester so he couldnt check it for me. it just went through emissions here in CT a week before i brought it to him and it passed emissions. he said it wont effect the performance of then truck so for now im trusdting he is right and am gonig to look into it some more. if anyone else knows otherwise please let me know

padodgeram is correct guys.. this code is USUALLY thrown because of a bad.. or a loose gas cap.. reset your lights.. make sure its tight.. and see how long it takes to bring it back on .. if it does come back on.. go buy a new gas cap.. and do the same thing
