i wonder if the gear has been thrown into the flywheel and never returned.. i bet that would make it hard to take off... other then that..i cant imagine why its doing that...

this is a stupid question - but there should have been one bolt and one nut (on a stud). both removed from the front (starter) side of the flywheel. its a little hard to see up in there. you didn't happen to remove a wrong bolt did you ?

..you might have removed the bolt for the ground strap that i was talking about previously, and didn't remove the stud/nut for the starter....they are on the same stud. the one on top....you should stop prying so you don't break you block...

correct.
mine just sort of fell off without any hassle.
this might be a little extreme, but you might try starting the nut back on the stud and the bolt in - just enough to keep it from falling off. hook up the wire and bump the starter. see what happens....
