Diff preload
whats up guys,
I just got a 99 1500, and it has a bad pinion bearing noise. I was gonna go over the rear during my long weekend. Its an open rear, 9.25, and 3.92 ratio. I ordered the overhaul kit and tried to get the pre-load tool also, but it seems I am not gonna get the tool now.
From looking through the forums I get a mixed opinion on how hard it is to set without this tool. Just wondering if anyone has opinions, tricks, methods, to set it without it. I am a tech at a foreign car dealer and we dont see any diff work. (thanks to FWD)
thanks for any help

I am in the middle of the gear swap. If you search for posts under my name you will find it. The tool you need is OTC # 6602 and you can order it online I beleive a company named miller also offer the same tool. I ended up after 3 days of searching finding a parts store in my area the was an authorized OTC dealer and they ordered for me. If you google OTC 6602 you will come up with places online that you can buy the tool for much cheaper than what I am paying for it localy.
thanks for the info.
I think I am going to try to make one, based on shipping times and not getting the tool in time for a holiday weekend. By looking at pictures online, I figure I could probably make one with a rod, and a nut welded or possibly use a large allen head on an extension.
Does anyone have any idea to the size of the hex on the tool?
