Transmission pan question
Ive had a leaky transmission pan for about a month now. Looks like the previous owner warped the lip some how. Went to the stealership and ordered another pan, and went to a buddies who supposidly knows what hes doin. I bought a gasket and filter kit from advance and brought it with me. When i get there he doesnt use the gasket at all and makes one out of copper silcone. He did this on the old pan and it still leaked. After repeated times of me sayin to use the gasket he doesnt. I come out this morning, and OF COURSE its leakin.
Soi plan to take it off tommrow and use the gasket. Hopefully it will stop the leak.
What im gettin at is, has anyone used this copper siclone with their gaskets? Or is this guy just an idoit backyard mechanic?

RE: Transmission pan question
I would say pull the pan, check the surface of the pan for nicks or chips from some mechanic getting happy with a screwdriver, and scrape off the copper gasket and use a rubber one.
With the rubber gasket when you reinstall it, tighten it down in a criss cross pattern so the gasket doesn't get overly stretched out at any one particular point. If you want to get really ****, you can tighten all bolts criss crossed to 8 ft/lbs, and then finish in a criss cross pattern at 13 ft/lbs.
If that doesn't do it, you've got bigger problems.

Second, that gasket is in there for a reason. Mine has one and it's leak free.
When you do it make sure you get ALL the debris of the pan and the tranny.

Actually, that's all mine has on it either. But the pressure of 2 quarts of unpressurized gear lube isn't as great as 15 quarts of hot pressurized tranny oil.
If that gasket makes you sleep better though, there's no harm using one. I've never run one on the diff and been just fine.

Someone needs to tell this to Jeep. Changed out the rear diff fluid and found only silicone sealer no gasket from the factory. Just crazy. I reinstalled with a gasket
