1996 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2L
hi guys ive seen this forum for a while and now i need some help
first off i have a vibration problem and i think its coming from the driveshaft. i have replaced the u-joint bearings and the pinion bearing, i havent messed with the tranny side of the driveshaft. i replaced the carrier bearing with a cheapo and i think that might be some of the problem its a timkin. so i guess ill have to replace it with a dodge factory parts $140 bucks ouch. unless you guys can come up with somethin else.
the big problem right now is i have multiple cylinder misfire (i think the code was P0300 or something along those lines) it misfired on every cylinder except for #7 and i have replaced the cap, rotor, plugs, wires. i still get the check engine light. it idles barely rough. the weird part is when im at astop light and let my foot off the brake and let it roll, the truck shimmies foward and back (not a whole lot but noticable). any input from you guys is appreciated.
thanks, Mike

Do yourself a big favor and double check that your cap is fully seated, the wires are fully seated in the cap and and on the plugs, the plugs are correct for your truck, and that your spark plug wires have been routed correctly to the right plug.
I would bet everyone of us at one time or another has mis-connected our spark plug wires or got the distributor cap not completely set on.
If all of that is correct, it's possible your coil is not providing enough spark to ignite the plugs correctly causing a misfire. Check your coil connections and if possible borrow a friends coil from his dodge and try it before buying a replacement.

i have already replaced the ignition coil that feeds to the distributor. one of my buddies said it might be the magnetic pickup coil in the distributor. i forgot to add that a while back i rerouted the wires to the factory specification. but i will check the distributor seating. the check engine light has been on on this truck for a few years. my father in law was to lazy to get it fixed and instead gotstickers from his buddy, this was before they were so **** about it. so it was giving me the error before i replaced the cap and noe after . but i will still check it out. thanks
In our Dodge Magnum engines the distributor only has one pickup and that is the camshaft position sensor that tells the computer when to enable the fuel injector. If that was bad it would cause your injectors to pass fuel at the wrong time or in the wrong amounts.
Double check all of your connections at the coil, the wiring leading to the coil, the distributor, and the wires leading to the distributor. Do you know if anybody has done any timing adjustments to the truck with a timing light? If so that could be your problem as you don't set the timing via the distributor. Yes the distributor has a specific location it needs to point to, but your crankshaft position sensor on the back of the passenger side head controls the vehicle timing.
Double check that the bolts and connections to it are tight. It could also be the cause of your issue as it does control your timing.

i did notice that the old plugs were alittle wet on the threads when i pulled them. i dont think the timing has ever been messed with either.howwill icheck the the position sensor? the trucks computer reset itself yesterday and popped up with a code again, so i will go to autozone and get the codes printed. i think that whoever replaced the cap and rotor before me might have put the rotor on reversed. doesnt the distributor shaft have a groove in it so it cam go on only two directions. im thinking i might pop er open and turn the rotor in a 180 and test then. i will post the accurate codes when i get them later.
