Default Air Intake System.....decisions...decisions.....

HI all you dodge maniacs. One question. I can't decide which air intake system to put on my 1998 Ram Sport. My initial thought was K&N. But looking at what they have available for my model, I didn't like it. I have also read about how crappy they are and how some people have had some problems withthe tube that goes to the filter; itcracks, since it's cheap. Not like the polished tubes which look more durable. Any suggestions?

Try the round open element style like this. Best bang for your buck. I just did mine the other day and I love it.

Thanks for the input cereal killer. I also have a Ram Sport, but mine is 1998 andnot 4x4. I don't really like the look of that air filter. I'd rather go with the whole system. Love the look of that shiny tube within the engine.
P.S. Just watched your youtube video. Wonder if the American Thunder Series sounds like that.

Looks or performance? Which are you after?
This is where you reply "BOTH!" Most find that that tube, polished or otherwise, really gets in the way under the hood and the performance of the CAI isn't that much to write home about.

Not to sure. Never heard an amerincan thunder series. But none of them really sound all that far apart. It's the magnum engines that make the noise. Mine's just a flowmaster 40 muffler on the stock exhaust. If you really want your truck to sound bad *** then drop the exhaust after the cat. Makes a real nice rumble.

Summitracing.com has the American Thunder series. I'm looking to buy the whole system, not just the muffler. Youreally think it does not make a difference if I buy the whole system? Isreplacing oldrusted tubing and old parts not worth it?

Well it depends on what you mean by whole system? are you going to get headers, a bigger y pipe, and a high flow cat? and then new pipes and mufflers? Or do you mean a catback system? Catback systems look nice, sound nice (mostly due to the mufflers, but the pipes do sound nicer),but performance wise are basically worthless. There might be a little, but not much. And when you consider a catback system can be anywhere from 250-500 dollars, and a muffler is like 70 dollars... are the pretty pipes worth it?

i to was going to get k+n's FLPKII but it was really expensive, plus i have read, and it makes sence that the filters get dirty from the massive amount of rain and mud and airborn dirt that gets in the engine bay, however you could get a shield, to block the mud and rain from coming up from the under body.

Yeah, im buying pipes, muffler, except for theheaders, not yet. But i'm sure it will sound nice. Anything is better than stock. And i'm not getting a cat back system.Better constructed, efficient piping made with better material is worth it, in my point ofview.
