Default Another Ram shifting problem

So I have 96 Sport Standard 4x4 with the 5.9 and it is an automatic with 141k miles. I just looked through all the topics that had to do with shifting, but couldnt find anything that matched my problem.

Heres my prob

Starting off in drive it seems like it has a granny gear or a really high stall and I dont start really moving till about 2200 rpms, then it will shift into 2nd then 3rd withn a second or 2. After it gets up to about 40mph, its fine driving. Also the OD light came on and will not go off, so that means the OD isnt engaging.

If I manual shift, it shifts better, but you can still tell theres still alot of torque missing.

When I try to launch in reverse, I pratically head bunt the steering wheel, its seems all its ***** are there, lol.

When I see what it does in 4x4, this it what it happens..

4H - same problems as above in 2H

4L - I could launch hard enough to smack my head on the back glass, lol.

Now when I was said and done testing all of this, you could really smell burning tranny fluid. When I check the fluid, it is up to level and looks brand new but smells really burned.

I just bought the truck and the guy said he had to rebuild the tranny and really do believe he did, theres just too much underneath that looks new (seals, parts, etc.).

So what do you guys think, am I fubarred? I was think torque converter?

TIA
DJ

Try this:

Start off in drive and acceleratenormally from a stop after 1-2 seconds shift manually to 1st gear.
Does it accelerate better after you drop it down to 1st?
If so the one way clutch (sprag) that's slipping. I don't think it's your TQ as you say it's better in reverse. A bad TQ would effect both forward and reverse and your fluid would burn very quickly. How long since the supposed rebuild?

Supposably the drivetrain's factory lock-up torque converter clutch is the real weak link in our trannys. Our trannys are decendants of the famous torqueflite 727 and should be at least as strong at best. However even though some torqueflites can handle upwards of 1000 hp, it doesn;t mean they all can. It all depends on how they are built. Factory specifications are meant to produce decent reliability and low production costs all equalling mediocre quality. If the previous owner did some work on the tranny, it doesn't mean that all problems are solved. For all you know, the system could have been flushed and a new torque converter could've been installed but the valvebody was left in place, among other things, thus allowing loose debris to collect in hidden chambers in the tranny. After a while, something may have freed itself and is now giving you sh*t. Only way to truly get an idea of what your dealing with is to either roll up your sleeves and take that tranny apart to fully clean it out and replace any worn parts and to upgrade, or talk to some good reputable companies that produce quality tranny parts so that you may be pointed in the right direction. I just read an article regarding dodge trannys and I'd say it's a start for solving you problems. Read it, the address is listed below. Also, there was an article in a 4x4 mag a while ago that touched on this subject. The website for the company (DTT) that blew the problem out of the water is also listed below, check em out. DTT specializes in making custom equipment for diesel and gas trucks that pound on their trannys hard as the clap of thunder.

There isnt even 500 miles on the rebuild. I did stop buy the lot where I bought the truck and he did show me the rebuild papers. I dont doubt he didnt do it, he's a very honest guy and I like to think Im good at judging somebodies character.

Anywho, I tried that test and it seemed like it accelerated the same when I shifted down to first and accelerated. I did purchase a 3 year drivetrain warranty, but I was thinkn if it was something simple, maybe I could do it.............but what is ever simple when it comes to transmissions, lol.

One more thing I noticed today, is the the 4x4 light keeps coming on and off when I run over a pot hole or a bump in the road, almost like its still hung up a little in 4x4........damn PA roads, lol.

Thanks for the replies guys
