He's got a good point there. Not to mention vehicles depreciate in value, even if the thing stays in excellent condition the whole time. You could get back what you paid for it if you sell it now, then Buy a newer one when you come home. But if you leave it sit and come back, then you're taking chances. You could very well end up selling it anyway and it woulnd't be worth nearly as much 3 years from now. If you really love it you could sell it for what you paid for it, then buy a truck that's 3 years newer 3 years from now for the same price basically. Or if you're leaving it with your folks, if they'd be good enough to run it and maintain it while you're gone then that would be the best thing.
It would just be a shame to come home after looking forward to doing so many things with it only to have it crap out on your when you finally do get home.

There's more to it than that, I hate to say it but you'd be better off selling it asap and buying another after you get back, vehicles deteriorate when sitting for long periods of time, unless you can keep it in a garage...
There's a slew of stuff you'll need to do to it before you leave, things like draining the oil and really most of the fluids and d/c'ing the battery and then there's a bunch of stuff when you get back, you really need to find articles on how and what to do about vehicles that are to be sitting that long, and someone will have to move the truck every so often or leave it sitting on blocks or you'll flat spot the tires something awful...
It is a process, you'll be spending several hours or more prepping it before you leave, and after you return.
And still it might not be ok, unless you really know what you're doing and even then you take your chances.
Not trying to scare you, but if you just park it and leave it sit for 3 years you will not have the truck you have now, not even close.

Just cranking it up isn't going to cut it. But if they could take it for a 20 mile run every 3 to a weekorso, or maybe just alternate using it with their own vehicles that should keep it fine.

Wehn I finally do leave thats what's going to happen, I'm giving the truck to my parent's to take care of while I'm gone. My dad use to be a mechanic so he knows a lot of stuff dealing with taking care of vehicals. It'll be easy to drop my truck off at their place too because I'll be flying out of the area they live in to go over to japan. So I'll get to drive home, chill with the family for a few days, then fly away.
