Most places I have worked , I would say the alignment / front end techs make very good money. Heavy line is hard work. Trans techs (I used to do that) is difficult anymore because a lot of the dealers have gone to reman programs and all you get paid to do is R & R.
from word of mouth only.....but around here...NY,,, deisel mechs can make mad money.. especially heavy ... from tractor trailers to construction to farmin... here in western ny we are well wide spread between trucking and farming and fair share of construction to boot... aswell as emergencyfleet servicing--> more state/local government typejobs in these areas but the bennies are awesome and state retirement rocks....
lets put it this way... when im done with my fire science degree,,, im going for heavy desiel mechanics... gotta love that GI bill!!!!
its all about demand
dept of labor projects a shortage of "qualified" (not to be confused with certified) welders will be close to 250,000 by the year of 2010
now if i was 18 yrs old, fresh out of HS, and figuring out what i wanted to do... and if was into fab. work etc etc... you bet your *** id be finding myself in some tech/voca school for a 2 yr/certificate welding program....
unfortunatly therse none withing a 400 mile radius of my location
