I run a Wilson 1000 mag. mount and like it quite a bit. I'd reccomend it. I've heard several guys swear by the 102" whip like you said but that thing is huge. I'm not sure if I'd want something quite that big if I didn't have to.
As for the radio I had a Cobra 29 like you were talking about and I hated that radio. Mine wasn't peaked and tuned or anything but I couldn't hardly understand people on it. I have quite a few people reccomend it to me. After I got it I had a few tell me that they didn't like the internal speaker either and to get an external one. Others seemed to like it fine. My other problem with it was it didn't seem to reach all that far even with a good swr. It may have been okay though and I just couldn't understand people. I ended up selling it which I'm quite glad I did. I got most of my money back out of it.
I now have a Superstar 121 and like it quite a bit. It also has the hi and low bands on it which is a nice addon. It seems to be a lot clearer and seems to reach further to me although I haven't tested for sure. I like it quite a bit and would reccomend it. I've got several friends that use this radio also and they all seem to like it.

I have 2 firesticks on mine but only one is connected to my cb. the other is connected to my scanner. I wanted them to match. The are mounted to the corner of my bed. I have issues with my setup so I need to take it to a cb shop and have them redo it. Not sure if its my connections I put on myself or not. I have a uniden something or other.

I have a 52" magnet mount cb antenna from radio shack on my truck. It works well, and has decent range 2 of my friends have the same set up and are happy with it. My only complaint is the low tree branches that keep knocking it off the roof. I swear by magnet mount antennas, installation is simple and almost no tuneing is involved.

Antenna type is important.
SWR is important.
But nothing makes as much difference in real world CB performance
as going to one of those aftermarket speakers
with built in noise reduction:
