Twice now,my truck would only start in neutral.
Hello there,
About a week ago I shut my 01' 2500 5.9 auto off while it was in 'Neutral'. Then when I tried to start it up, it wouldn't start in 'Park'. So I put it in 'Neutral' and it started right up. So today, my wife calls me on the cell & tells me the truck wont start. I told her to try starting it in 'Neutral' and guess what....? It started.
Now what would be the cause of this?

Check your shifter linkage for adjustment. It's possible due to wear your shifter linkage at the trans isn't going all the way into park.
If that all checks out you probably need a new neutral safety/backup light switch. It mounts on the trans by the pan. 3 wires.

IDK if there is an MLPS sensor on our trans, but I remember on the 4r70w (fords main rwd trans) that sensor would die often and it would cause you to have to start up in neutral. (MLPS=Manual Lever Position Sensor, or something along those lines)
For whatever it is worth
my 1995 Ram started doing this
about 800 miles before the torque converter lockup solenoid failed.
I have wondered if the two events were related,
perhaps do to an electrical fault inside the automatic transmission.
