the drop in liners that i hav had experience with did not cause any rust, my dad has one now and his truck is an 03 and not a sratch on the bed underneath and the wame with his old truck which was a 96 dakota, if you dont take care of the bedliner, ie you need to take it out and clean the bed after you have been hauling dirt or mulch or something else that could damage the paint job, but like anything else if you take care of it then it will be fine, it probably helps the no rust part that it was garage kept both trucks but still i would suggest an over the rail plastic drop in bc they stop more stuff from getting under the liner, just my .02
I did the Herculiner too with no problems. Took bout four hours. It holds up great plus you can buy a can and touch it up if you ever do scratch through it. I even ran it down the bottom side of my truck to keep the junk Dodge doors from rustin on the bottom. All you have to do for prep is hose it out scuff it good with a scotch bright and wipe it down with acetone.
i helped put the herculiner in my bosses truck,we added some white sand to thinking it up alot an give it some grit, looked alot better then the rhino an cost way less than rhino,me myself i wouldnt give that much for a rhino deal ,it dont take an genius to DIY
i have a buddy with hurculiner its a couple years old and looks like sh*t. i paid 425 for a line-x. dropped it off at 8:00 picked it up on my lunch break. liner is super thick and i haven't scratched it yet, i throw alot of steel and auto parts in it. anyway if i do scratch it its lifetime gauranteed
I think the main thing on Herculiner is surface prep. If you don't take your time and do it right it's probably gonna look like crap before long.
If you do do it right and get some scratches eventually you can buy another can for touch up purposes. Scuff it clean it and just brush over the spots you need it on.
