Cab change
When I looked for my truck, the only thing I gave up was the four door extended cab for a two door extended cab. I am now thinking of a cab change. Has anyone ever tried this? Also, as stated in a previous post, I wanted to cut out for aftermarket speaker grills and the real problem is the rear... Will this work better on the 4 door?
I've contemplated this too as I am in your same situation. I don't think it would be as bad as it looks actually. Lots of wiring, but I wouldn't try re running it all, I would just cut it outside the cab, and reconnect it all after the new cab is on. Steering would have to come apart, as would the transfer case linkage and a few other things. Fenders would probably need to come off, and maybe even the bed to ensure ease of cab removal. From there, the cab (hypothically) should lift up. Lots of stuff to do, but I really don't think it would be that bad. I wonder if the length/shape of the cabs are absolutly identical. I think they are, but if they weren't, you might have some issues getting it to sit on the frame good, and fit in the space left from the extended cab.
You guys are waaay to attached if you just want to start swapping cabs because of a couple doors. I mean, I've helped switch boxes on trucks. But that's only 8 bolts, a fuel neck, and a brake light harness. Probably only about 1 hour of work, figure 2 hours since you always need to find two more guys to help lift when you realize that you were wrong in thinking that it only took two people to lift a full size box.
Honestly, I would just get a new truck. Cab is gonna cost you $1,000min, plus the cost and time to make a hoist, plus TONS of time, plus paint, plus interior swapping. I mean, cool if you really wanna put that much work into a truck to make it look like another truck down the street or at the dealer.
I think if you're looking to put that much money time into a truck, get a new one. These trucks aren't getting any younger and it would make sense to get something newer if you're looking to spend that kind of cash and effort. Save yourselves the headaches!

i got a good question for this thread. would i be able to go from a regular cab longbed to a 4 door shortbed? i really need the extra cab space and dont have money for a new truck. and since i need a new bed i figured why not
I figure on getting a 4 door parts truck in the future. Can some one with a 4 door post pics of the rear speakers? I want to see if the grills are round or semi circle.
