Default Unreliable 4X4 mode

The other day I got my truck stuck....and the rear wheels were spinning and from time to time the front wheels were too. My rear end is limited slip diferential, maybe my front end isn't? My dad had the same problem with his 2006 silverado..I need all tires to lock even if it takes manual hubs...any suggestions?

You didn't provide any info about your truck. Could be broke, driver error, needs major bucks in upgrades...

Manual locking hubs are not going to help. They just lock the wheel onto the front axle. The problem lies with your carrier in your differentials. Most trucks come from the factory with open diffs. Meaning that one wheel usually gets most of the power. That is fine when you are on ground with good traction. However, once you are on a slick surface, it's limitations are obvious.

From what I have seen historically, trucks with limited slips in the back, usually don't have them in the front. I'm not saying it can never happen - but in most cases they simply are not there.

Even with a limited slip diff - sometimes you will need to do weird stuff like tap on the brakes and the gas at the same time. The reason being that the breaks will slow down the free spinning wheel enough to start transferring power to the other wheel.

If you want to have power going equally to all 4 tires - they you are going to need lockers. They are likelimited slips on steroids. There are a lot of differentdesigns out there, and you can find something that will fit your budget and/or needs. You can get automatic lockers like Detroit (which will not let either wheel move slower than the ring gear) or you can get on demand lockers (like ARB) where you can flip a switch and lock them up. The nice thing about on demand lockers, is that you get very good street maners, but you can lock them when you need them.

Anyway - you should read up on the various lockers that are available and see if you can find something that will fit your needs

Good luck!

I was going to pull a friend's mini tractor out of grease-mud and got stuck myself. It's a 99 5.2 liter 5-speed with manual transfer case. We used my truck as an anchor point and used a 2 ton come-along to get the tractor out, then the tractor pulled me out. After my front stopped spinning, I put it in 2 wheel drive to ease the strain on my clutch....
