Default New Cat

I'm fairly sure I need a new cat. It's stock and 174k miles. Not bad smelling but starting and I think I'm getting a little too much backpressure. To have this done or direct bolt ons here seem pretty pricey. Has anyone used this one from Summit?

you can check it with a temp gun... output temp needs to be hotter than the input.

I had mine replaced with a Magnaflow andlike it a lot, mine was 2.5" single in/single out though, and nothing about my exhaust was bolt on. I had 3: pipes from the factory, but the cat and the exhaust both knuckled down to 2.5" so I had a exhaust guy cut out the knuckled down cat and muffler and go straight 3" thru the rest of the exhaust. Much improved sound and throttle. I did it in 2 separate install because of funds and I think he charged me like $190 for the cat replacement ($160 for the muffler IIRC.)

That one from summit looks like it's replacing the y pipe and going dual in single out, but I'd check your y pipe to see what diameter it is. Try to find one that goes 3" out if that's the size of your cat back (sig didn't say), otherwise yournew cat's still the source of somebackpressure anyway.

Thanks
The cheapest I have found install wise is $225 and all shops cut out my cat, leave the stock Y, and weld in just a new cat. I'd do the whole thing myself but for a bolt on replacement, it's $400 some odd bucks just for the part. I can get just the weld in unit for cheaper but my welding skills aren't there yet. So, a direct bolt on like this and for that price, doesn't seem like it can be beat.
I'll have to see if one of the auto parts places rents a gun. Good tip. thanks

I really like the Magnaflow cat from a performance standpoint, but mine broke apart on the trail run we just did. Not sure if the Magnaflows are weak and can not handle vibration, or if it was just an isolated case. But I noticed an improvement on the top end for sure after I had it installed. Also made the exhaust a tad louder. Mine was either part# 94037 part# 94057, can't remember for sure. I can't say for sure what mine cost becasue it was paid for by Chrysler under their cat recall about a year or so ago.
I've also heard good things about the Catco brand of high flow cats.

One side note if you are planning to replace your cat. It is common that the o2 sensor that you'll need to remove will be seized. That's what happens over time at temps that high, and the constant heating and cooling. It's pretty easy to destroy the threads on it just trying to get it out. So, be prepared to have to replace the o2 sensor too, escpecially if this is your stock cat, and it has been in there for 174k miles. It happened on mine, and I just went with a universal sensor as a replacement to save money. The OEM sensor from a dealership was about $250. I think mine was about $60.

That much money for an O2 sensor is crazy.
Well, here's my numbers. I guess this may not be the issue.
Manifold 314, Down Pipe 200, Cat In 213, Cat 320, Cat Out 263, Muffler In 230, Muffler Out 190, Tailpipe 110

It just feels kind of sluggish sometimes and with that oil light flickering after highway driving, I thought maybe there was enough of a stop up that I was getting too much backpressure and causing just a slight RPM drop at idle. Well, I'm pushing more weight and less aero now plus, I'm not far from my tune up time. Maybe that is all the sluggishness is.

Now, the blinky oil light and new rattle at startup is something I need to figure out.
