Noise from rear differential..I am lost!!!
Hey guys....hopefully you guys can help me out....I have a 98 1500 4x4 with 138,000 miles...when cruising down the road with my foot off the gas, I have this weird windy type noise coming from the rear....at first I thought it was the bearings, which I replaced, all six off them last week....now the noise is still here ESPECIALLY when I turn right, coming from the rear passenger side....my mechanic is lost and so am I...any help is appreciated....

If you replaced all the bearings like you said you did...then the problem would probably be in the gear setup. your mechanic might not have checked the gear pattern when reassemblying, your mechanic should have put in new shims which would change your backlash and also your gear patten. if he set it up with a toe pattern then it is going to make a winding noise forever however that is the strongest part of the ring gear. if he set it up with a heel pattern it then it would be quiet but also alot weaker. you could ask him how much backlash there is and what kind of pattern you have. also the pinion depth will change the face, flank portion of the pattern. if he cant answer these questions for you then he shouldn't be working on rearends
