Default Brake shields

Hi,

I replaced a front hub and front brakes on my 1998 RAM QC 4x4 today. I followed the instructions from the Dodge service manual. The instructions indicated that there should be a brake shield and hub shim that should be installed with the hub. My truck does not have either of these. Should it?

I'm wondering if these were discarded last year whenthe front axle u-joints replaced at a local garage.

Thanks,

Jim

Thanks for the response. I've been driving without them for over a year.Any idea on what the impact of not having these installed is?

The spacer plus the thickenss of the shield must serve a purpose.

Replacing these is going to be a pain in the butt.

I did a quick search of my usual online parts sources and came up empty. I plan on contacting the garage that replaced the axle u-joints on Monday.

I bet they destroyed them when removing the bearing. It happens all the time but I dont think the shim is as important as the shield. The shield helps the rotor stay cool. Usually the bearing/hub assembly's get stuck in the spindle due to rust and I have had to use an air hammer to pry between the spindle and hub assembly to get it out and it usually mangles the shim and shield. Although it shouldn't cause any problems I would check into having the shop get them replaced if infact they were the ones that removed them.

I am replacing my front hubs and I need new shields since mine are rusted and not reusable. Anyone know where I can find them? I have searched every parts store including the dealer and they are not made any more...? I need my truck so I may be putting it back together without the shields.

My brake shields have been off for three years. Everything works without any problems. They got destroyed by me when I did my u joints and ball joints.

I got mine from Mopar America as they were the cheapest with shipping (but I'm in Canada). Left and right are both part number 52008424; they are not sided. They are pretty pricey and hard to find but they are out there.

These, I believe, are only for 94-99 trucks with single piston calipers. Pretty certain that the dual piston caliper trucks (00-01) have a different shield.
