High-flow cat vs. gutted cat.

High-flow cat vs. gutted cat.
I am considering either purchasing a high-flow cat. or gutting my current cat. I have roughly 95000 on my 97 ram and want something that not only gives power but does not screw my computer up. Any of you out there tried one of these? I want to of course save money but if going the high-flow way is better then I will go that way. Where is a good place to get one? I see one on e-bay for $180 for the first half of the exhaust system.

RE: High-flow cat vs. gutted cat.
A gutted cat should not throw a code or affect driveability. I have the cat gutted on my 98, and it runs just fine and still get 17-18 mpg. The only thing you have to worry about is emissions. If you live in an area that requires a sniffer or dyno test, replace it with a hi-flow cat. You can either get the one you are looking at (the cat and downpipes) or just the cat (the cat by itself runs around $85).

RE: High-flow cat vs. gutted cat.
I am not worried about emissions where I live. I want better performance and louder exhaust. I am however concerned with messing up my trucks computer or something else. I have heard of the O2 simulators to use on the O2 lines. Will I need this on my truck?

RE: High-flow cat vs. gutted cat.
o2 simulators are used for the post cat o2 sensor only. Check and see if you have 2 o2's on there. I'd replace it with a Carsound cat, (I think you only have 1 under there) because if you remove too much backpressure, you'll loose low end power.
Why do you need to change it? is it plugged or rattling?

RE: High-flow cat vs. gutted cat.
I was considering it for a performance upgrade. I have decided to go with a high-flow...if I do anything. I have some concerns doing this upgrade.
1. Is it worth it?
2. Money
3. Messing my computer up.
This upgrade is a fairly expensive one. I want to go with the whole change-out from the exhaust manifold to the muffler...as seen on e-bay for $200.
