Default Tranny Fluid

Over the weekend I changed my tranny fluid and added Lucas Tranny Oil (3 quarts of ATF-4 and 1 quart of Lucas) which is really thick the next day it started shifting really hard I looked at another thread and it said that it probably needs 5 quarts added another one for a total of five quarts the hard shifting has continued but only has done about once a day should I add another one or re-drain it and not add any Lucas Tranny oil this time because thats when the problem started? Has anyone out there added Lucas to their tranny?

Were you having any problems before changing the fluid? I have put lucas in my cars and my truck before and never have had problems with it.

It depends. When you do a change by just dropping the pan I've added 5 before and had it up to proper fill and added another time added nearly 7.

Get the truck warmed up by driving it around a bit. Come to a stop, put on the e-brake and set the tranny in neutral. Get out and check your tranny dipstick. Add or subtract fluid to get it within the normal range.

Personally I'm not a fan of lucas stuff. Not only is it extremely thick in cold weather, but I've seen it foam up really bad before especially when used (esp in diffs), however I have never tried their tranny specific additive. I feel changing the fluid/filter when needed and replacing with clean ATF+4 alone is the way to go.

Been a tech for over 30 years and worked extensively on trans (mostly Toyota and Mitsubishi) and from what I know :any additives are not good for an auto trans. Just keep the fluid clean and change the filter periodically and should be fine. Personally I would get that additive out of there.

6-7 quarts to drop/refill pan. check level in neutral, not park.
if there were no problems before and now there are, i'd drain it out.
