What seemed to be transmission problems...
Hey Dodge Forum
Well all of us know that the dodge ram transmissions (particularly 2nd gen) are known for their transmission problems. Well got my transmission fluid changed and the mechanics found 2 half circle bands that appeared to be snapped in half on the bottom of my transmission pan. Haven't had any problems with the transmission since the fluid change (shifting wise) but I've been hearing this noise that eventually got louder and louder as the weeks/months have passed. So today I decided enough was enough so I went to the transmission shop to have it looked at and they told me that the noise i was hearing wasn't from the transmission but it was the rear end.
My question to yall, are dodges known for their rear ends needing servicing? And anyone have a clue of what this winding noise could be? It winds up and makes the noise after 20 MPH and when i deccelerate it grinds (winding and grinding if you will).

Are dodges known for having their rearends needing serviceing...
...
Pretty much everything on something mechanical needs serviceing at some point...
So your answer is yes...

The pinions on the 9.25's are notorious for getting slop in them, however it is most often associated with a clunk when put into gear not a whine. I'd pull it apart and see what's up in there. You probably chewed up some of the gears.
Now - about those bands in the trans pan ? How big were they ?

Would need to see a picture of the parts they found in the tranny pan... As far as the noise in the rear end, you need to remove the diff cover and see what is in the bottom of it. If you have a tru-loc like I had, then your clips may have come apart. Which I am installing my new Auburn L/S this weekend.. Lot's o' fun...[:@]
Transmission shop told me that the bearings were bad, the ring gear and pinion are shot, and was suprised i was driving on it...
He also said that he would've given me about 100-150 miles left to drive on it.
New seals, new ring, new pinion, new bearings, gear oil and labor - 2100 dollars...
Here are the pictures of what came out of the trans.

Those look like pieces of a snap ring that hold the clutch plates and and steel plates in one of the clutch packs. The rings are probably 6-7 inches in diameter and it looks like pieces of one of them broke off. If thats what it is - you must still have enough of the ring in there to hold the clutch pack together and that's why it is still working. Will definately be a future problem if thats what it is.
