UNABLE TO MAINTAIN HIGHWAY SPEED!
Ok, here we go. I've got a 97 ram 1500 with a 360, 7 inches of lift and 35x12.5x15 BFG MT's, flowmaster 40 series duallys.....still has stock gears though...i believe they are 3.55. Around town this thing has nothing but power....but as soon as i get on the highway at speeds of 65 mph or greater it will not maintain speed. Trying to get it to go above 70 is a joke. It will only go above 70 when in 3rd gear. I know the speedometer and tachometer is off because when i am doing 60 mph its tacking at 1500rpm and i had a buddy of mine clock me, when the speedo said i was doing 50 mph he clocked me at 45 mph. It just had new cats put on it and i thought that that would make a difference, NOPE! I'm really getting sick and tired of the whole highway thing. I have been told a lot of different things, new gears, a pcm flash, TRUspeed calibrator from superlift. WHAT SHOULD I DO?!

RE: UNABLE TO MAINTAIN HIGHWAY SPEED!
new gears will more then likely solve your problem....4.10 for mostly highway and mpg...or 4.56's for town and more low end torque. if you think your truck as power now, just wait till you get the gears in there....not to mention your putting alot of stress on your trans with the stock gears

RE: UNABLE TO MAINTAIN HIGHWAY SPEED!
I run 35/12.5/17's with 4.10 gearing, and the truck has no issue at all getting to high speeds and maintaining them. It also has incredible torque and superior "off the line power". The only problem with highway driving that I have, is the noise the mud tires make. I plan to get a smoother tread before the winter starts, because I can't stand the rumbling sound of mud tires, makes highway driving very uncomfortable. The mud tread also interrupts the beautiful note of the exhaust system lol. So I think gearing is absolutely your issue, those tires are much too big for 3.55 gearing unfortunately.

RE: UNABLE TO MAINTAIN HIGHWAY SPEED!
I just had the 4.56 gears put in my truck Tuesday of this week. Even though I am not hitting the throuttle hard yet due to break-in period, I do know that they are much better than the stock 3.55 gears that they took out. I read a lot of what everybody had to say on gearing and I wanted to go with the 4.88s, but 4wheelparts said that the 4.88s were on indefinite backorder for the rear axle, and for the front axle, 4.88s weren't available. That's why I got the 4.56s. As you can see in my signature, I have 37" tires (actually measure 36.5" at best) and this gear ratio seems well suited for them. I got different answers when I spoke with their personnel regarding the best choice. One guy told me that he wouldn't use 4.88s except on tires 40" or more, 4.56s were still too low for my truck, and the best gears would be 4.10s. When I spoke with someone else, they said 4.56s would be a great choice and too bad the 4.88s weren't available... All I can say is this, after driving home with the 4.56s, I was very happy I didn't go with the 4.10s for how I want my truck to perform.
