Default Mystery Oil Leak Discovered - How to Fix??

Well, for about a year I've been flumoxed by an oil leak with my engine. I finally narrowed it down to the oil filter adapter plate. When I rebuilt the engine, the machine shop told me to scrap the gasket in the rebuilt kit and make one from a laundry detergent box, as it seems the waxy covering helps seal better. I opted to coat one side of the gasket from the kit with some sealant. Well, that thing it leaking like a New Orleans levy, so I am wondering what anyone out here has used on rebuilds to seal the filter adapter plate.

I have used a piece of a cardboard box to make a gasket in an emergrncy but never when a gasket was available that was specifically made for that part. I think that after time the cardboard will get saturated with whatever liquid (oil - coolant - etc.) you are trying to seal and will leak. I would just get a regular gasket and use it.

So use a proper gasket and no sealant?

I used just a gasket on my truck with no gasket sealer, because I did not want to take a chance ofanything stopping up my oil filter.
