According to this one guy...
Like some of you guys out there I'm not made of money. I was sold on going to get a new (high flow) cat put on my 94' 360 earlier, but when I called the local muffler shop the dude said that he could only replace OEM because it was illegal to tamper with a cat unless it was believed to need repairs. So I asked him about putting a High Flow cat on in replacement of my (broken) converter and he said that there really wasn't such a thing or something to that effect. What do you guys think? Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? If you have a recommendation for a replacement cat or have any info. concerning this please respond!
Thanks..
Thanks..
It is illegal to modify the exhaust if the truck has (I believe its 5 years old or 50,000 miles). Since yours in a 94 you will be fine. And yes there is such thing as a highflow cat, Magnaflow, Catco (which is still magnaflow brand) all have them for our trucks.
I would try going somewhere else if I was you...

I have heard shops say that they won't touch anything at all on my exhaust system once the converter has been modified / removed. Even getting the muffler changed out was a problem for some shops. My advice on this, assuming you have no friends who can weld, is to ask around to various shops. Some will give you a better answer in person than will over the phone. Sometimes you have to go to an exhaust shop out of the city to get this work done, and sometimes it is cheaper also. I'm sure there will be someone on this forum who will be able to point you in the right direction in the area you're in.
I've never heard of a shop that won't replace a broken cat. Maybe he thought you were the police and were setting up some sort of sting.
If you really want it replaced, drive an old screwdriver into that cat with a sledge and take it to a shop and tell them you hit something on the road and it penetrated your cat. Can't imagine anybody refusing obvious visual damage.

haha nice aim4squirrels
awesome - free screwdiver!
yeah your current choice of exhaust shop is bad
yes - there is a high flow cat
i have a magnaflow one
what i remember is that the difference is the honey comb inside of the high-flow cat is more spaced out - more flow, and has larger concentration of platinum and all that other good stuff inside a cat - so therefore, same effect as a stock cat - but more flow
your shop is full of sh*t
talk to other shops in person
or find a friend that can weld!

I have a Magnaflow high flow cat on mine.
I bought it and a stainless "Y" pipe from Summit. I changed it out in my driveway in about an hour. It was ver easy to do.
At the same time I put in a Flowmaster 40 on with dual turn downs. I have since gone with full tailpipes (the flowmaster with turndowns was a bit loud for me).
If you can't weld, clamps will work just fine. Or clamp everything together and then take it to a shop to have it welded. Anyway, the shop that told you there is no such thing as a high flow cat is full of it. I would go somewhere else as recomended above.
