Default 318 to 360 swap

i have a 2001 ram sitting in my driveway that i just pulled the stock 318 out and dropped in a 360....
the 360 has a mopar performance cam....and the computer in the truck is still for the 318....check engine light is not on...
now, the truck seems to have a little shake to it when ideling...could this be from the cam, or is there maybe a misfire since the computer is for the old 318 instead of the new 360???
is there a difference between the 318 and 360 computer????

I did the same exact swap in my 01. The 318 is an internally balanced engine while the 360 is externally balanced. When you did the swap did you re-use the crankshaft damper and/or the flex plate from your 318. If so that is where your problem is. The 360 requires a different damper and flex plate from the 318.
As far as the computer, your truck will run with the 318 computer. However, it will run much better with a custom flash on your 318 computer. You could also try a 360 computer for the fuel curve. By the way there were two different types of computers used in 2001 so you have to make sure you purchase the correct one.
Hope this helps.

Check with a tranny guy about the converter, too. I know the flex plates are different on the magnums from 5.2 to 5.9, but never actually looked into it on the converters. The older LA blocks could use the same flexplate, but the converters were where the balancing was done (also had the ring gear on the converters).

Unfortunately, you're gonna have to yank either the motor or the tranny to remedy your problem. No way around that, and it's gonna tear stuff apart if you don't get it fixed.

And it would be a good idea to grab the 360 PCM.

which part is considered the flex plate on these motors??? im completely lost when it comes to anything other then a fwd 4 cylinder.....
the only motor parts from the 318 that i put on the 360 were the fuel injectors (since the plug was different) and the big piece that bolts to the crank and the torque convertor....i would assume that the flex plate....but im confused right now.....
otherwise the front damper and the pulley are both those from the 360

no not the piece with all the teeth, this one is smooth all the way around....a sensor rubs on it...actually i guess that everything on the tranny side did come from the 318.....
i guess i will let the guy know that he needs a 360 flex plate then....

how bad would it be to use the flex plate and the part i mentioned above from the 318???? they both look the same....

sorry guess i was wrong i guess the teeth are on the torque converter for the starter but you still need to replace the flex plate because they are balanced differently between the two. good luck with the fix.

The flex plate from the 318 is the exact size of that for the 360. However, the 360 also has balancing welded to it to balance the engine. Without this balancing the 360 wil ltear itself apart and may take the tranny with it.
As far as the torque converter is concerned the 318 and 360 swap directly. The balancing was moved from the torque converter to the flexplate several years ago. What the flex plate does for both engines is connect the crankshaft to the torque converter. It also has 8 rectangular holes along the edge where the crankshaft position sensor takes its readings from to tell the ECM how to adjust everything to make the engine run.
Good luck.
