Ignition upgrade
Looking to upgrade my ignition system. Summit and MSD websites do not list a part for a Dodge. I know that the MSD says universal fit but they do nothave our trucks on the application list. I know I can get a high output coil but I want more control. What has everyone done?
Are you wanting a multiple spark box like the 6A, a universal coil like a Blaster 2 or 3 or are you looking to just replace the stock coil with a direct fit upgradelike the 8223?
There's several boxes that MSD has that can set rev limiters, designed for off road use, circle track, all kinds of crap. Most of them are universal as they can be put on a dodge, ford, GM, yota, whatever.

you can buy an accell adapter to make the coil plug & play... I would suggest MSD 8.5 wires, 3923 plugs, mopar cap & rotor and a hot coil from msd... using the 6a boxes will eat up your cap & rotor in about 20~25k milesand if your anything like me, you've had enough of laying on top of motors...
Sorry I got those numbers confused 8228 is the one that looks like the stocker. 8223 is the Baster 3 coil I just put in.

So are the blaster coils better then the 8228? I have a 1997 so it would be a direct replacement.

and found no acceleration or MPG advantage to any of them
on a Magnum 5.9V8

The main thing that Ram posters have said about the MSD mulit-spark boxes is that they wear out the rotor tip and distributor cap metal edges VERY QUICKLY
and there have been a few posts where Dodge owners have 'fried' the thyrisor switching circuit that is inside the PCM computer...expensive repair.

I thought the majority of those PCM problems were a result of running a Blaster SS coil without an inlineresistor due to the primary resistance on the SS being half the "standard" blaster coil? I hadn't readone that frieddue to a proper install of a standard blaster coil and box setup.
You've obviously been here longer and might recall reading it.If you recall the link, I'd love to read up on it. Sometimes the good stuff is buriedin a non related thread

The 8228 is a blaster coil (direct replacement same shape, fits mounting bolts) but the max voltage is about 10K less (35K vs 45K) than the 8223(largeround coil), according to MSD. But that's still 10K over stock. I believe the turns ratio on the 8228 is 70:1 and the 8223 is 100:1, which is what leads to the igher voltage build up.
