Default noise under dash

I am not sure how to explaim the noise but it sounds like whine or errrrr or something like that. I think it is electrical and it is the loudest around the stereo area. I know it is not a bad ground for 2 reasons...it is not radio noise and it still does it with the stereo unhooked. I am wondering if it could be the fan blower or something...you can't hear it when you are going over 40 mph.

Thanks for all the help
Brad

Does the sound get louder as you gently press the accelerator pedal and then quit as you stop pressing / let up on it? Mine does this and I believe this is caused by a vacuum leak in the ventilation system. I haven't investigated it too much yet, but it is on my list of things to fix.

I don't believe it is vacuum because I fixed all of that, when my ac was going to defroster, with the vacuum canisters from Dodge. It has no change or gets quieter if you give it gas...I have also noticed that putting it in neutral sometimesit quits...and sometimes after I shut the vehicle off it still makes the noise for 2 or 3 seconds.

When the truck is shut off, and the sound lasts for 2-3 more seconds, does the noise taper off like a motor / fan winding down to a stop
- or -
does it remain the same noise level for the 2-3 seconds and then suddenly stop?

I think it tapers off but turning on the blower has no change in the noise

I apologize if this sounds like a stupid question, but do you have electric cooling fan(s)? I'm only brainstorming here and I am just a backyard mechanic at best. I have an electric cooling fan on my worktruck and it makes a similar sound to what you're describing. The sound sometimes is reflected in ways that make it seem like it is coming from the dash and not the engine compartment. It only started doing it lately, or at least I started noticing it lately. Just a thought...

nope no electric cooling fan...but I thought it could be the blower just that when you turn on the blower it doesn't change the sound

I bet you have a cat, a squirrel, or a midget stuck behind your dash.

Hey, I tried!

Has anything changed recently on your truck? Any new mods? How long has this condition existed?

The only other thing I can think of would be some kind of emf being caused by the ignition and picked up by the speakers through the wiring. This condition would typically be a little different from what you've described though. The whining sound would vary in pitch with different engine rpms, and would stop immediately when the engine is shut off. Also, the sound would be obviously coming from the speakers and not the dash. I will keep thinking of possible causes but as for now, I got nothin' else. Hopefully someone else can help with this.

Is it the door chime module for some reason?
