Recommend transmission oil.
Hi, can anybody out there tell me the correct/best transmission oil to for my 2000 Ram 1500 Magnum 5.9. It has the 46RE. The manual recommends Dexron, ATF+3 or Chrysler type 7176.
I am in the UK ,Chrysler 7176 must have a different name over here and dealers are quite rare so I'm finding it hard to find. Also ,on a previous post somewhere it said to stay away from Dexron. So what should I use ?
Also ,on the subject of oils. Whats the best for 9 1/2 Chrysler diff (12 bolt)?
Would you also recommend a fully synthetic or semi-synthetic engine oil ?
Any branded oils e.g Valvoline, Shell etc are OK as they are available in the UK. Its just the Chrysler/Dodge/Mopar oils that are hard to find.
Thanks.

ATF+4 is the current transmission fluid in use by Chrysler. I know Valvoline makes some that meets that spec. I'm running 75W-90 synthetic in my diff. Engine oil is your preference, I'm running Valvoline 10W-30 synthetic in mine.
ATF=4 WITH A GOOD SIZED COOLER UPFRONT! That is the way to go even if you don't tow! Most 46RE's 518's we see burn! KEEP IT KOOL AND YOU WILL ROOL!

DO NOT use Dexron OR Mercon in your tranny. These are typesthat are made for Ford and GMC I believe.
You'llget a good case of "chitty-chitty-bang-bang" if youdo.
Use only ATF +4. A typical drain and refill is about 6 quarts.Try these guys: http://www.usaimports.co.uk/ They might be ableto get you the right oil straight from Chrysler
I run Mobil 1 10w30 motor oil and Mobil 1 75W140 gear oil; all synthetics. The 75W140 is for more severe use like towing, butI like the extra insurance in the heat here in Texas. You should be OK with 75W90 in the UK temps, but checkthe sticker in the glove box (if you have a sticker there) and see if you have a Limited Slip Differential (LSD or also called a posi unit, posi traction, traction unit, trak lok, etc.). If you do, you'll need either a gear oil with a friction modifier in it, or a tube of friction modifier to add to the gear oil. I don't know about the brands in the UK so you'll have to read the label carefully.

The Ram came across in 2006. I've had it since early summer. The guy who imported it was on holiday in Florida and brought it back with him. I think it was used by an electrician as it has the bed cover ? on and tool boxes which contained bits of wire etc. It did have signwriting on the side but that has now been removed, even though you can still see it faintly. I can't make out what it says , looks like BTI (whatever that is). I've recently found an auto parts receipt behind the rear seats from NAPA AUTO PARTS , LAND O LAKES BLVD, FL.
