Trans just went out.... what to expect?
My 2001 Ram 1500 4X4 PU transmission just left me stranded on the side of the HWY. It would rev high but was not engaging, then to the point of just stopped completley. I have 175k miles on this trans. I just had it towed to a trans repair place nearby. Any idea as to what to expect in terms of what broke and cost of repairs? Thanks
dont spend the money to rebuild it... www.thefastman.com has awsome trannys just buy one of his and sleep sounder.
dang wish i lived in reno. i rebuilt mine this last summer i believe was about 2500 or so, had to rebuild it only 3 weeks after i had my trasnfer case rebuilt. it was quite a crappy summer for my truck, but yeah expect some $$$
If my auto dies I plan to swap in a Manual. NV4500 from a 3/4 or 1 ton Dodge. It'll be way cheaper and they're fairly bulletproof.

I purchase a 46re from Dr Evil transmissions in Schaumburg Illinois. It was the "Pure Evil" model with torque converter, new tranny cooler, enough Redline fluid for install and 12,000 mile fuid change, and Hughes deep transmission pan. Including shipping both ways I paid about $2100. Paid an extra $600 to have it installed. So far absolutely no issues with it. I am very satisfied with my purchase. Also, I ordered it on a monday and it arrived on Thursday.
what is the name of the place you are getting it rebuilt at?
where are you located?
if you have the time, patience and tools, DIY!

umm
did you check fluid level?
was it foamy/ or full of air bubbles?
can you hear any different noise when trying to engage the tranny while at idle?
could be.......
front pump, seals burnt out/broken
2001.... solenoid(s)
can't diagnose it completely from here... haha
you can check pressures at the test ports on the side of th etranny and find out what is/is not getting pressure when it is supposed to...
does reverse work?
