Which is better for hauling 5.2or 5.9?

Heh, I really appreciate all of the reponse. You guys are giving me a lot of things to consider. If it was a perfect world and I had wheelbarrels of money, no question I'd go with the diesel. The point is I'm ona budget and I'm sure most of you can relate. I'm looking at spending 10-13K tops and I'd say the diesel isn't going to happen. I am also looking at it being as fuel effiicent as possible (if that is possible with a truck), but also have to consider the towing capabilities. Part of the issue is that I don't know what I'm going to be hauling yet, but don't wantto limit my options quiteyet if a great deal comes along. I'd say a 25 footer is the longest I'd be looking at. That said, if you have any other bits of wisdom, don't hesitate as I sure like hearing from your experiences.

I have a 96 1500 with a 5.2 in it and it sucked for towing. If you want to go more than 65 MPH, you had better be going down hill. And you will have to take it out of OD too, or you will burn up your tranny. I towed a 2 horse bumper pull with 2 ***** and gear it weighed about 5k-6k lbs. It was all that it could do to keep up with traffic on the highway. It also gets about 8MPG while towing this trailer.
In 2001 I got a 2500 diesel and can tow the same trailerand 2 horses and you don't even know that it is back there. I have never had to take it out of OD while towing this trailer and I get 14MPG while towing it. I get 20-21 MPG when empty.
The programmers do not work on the gas engines, but the diesels are a different story! If youhave a 2nd or 3rd gen diesel and don't have some type of programmer on it, then you do not know what you are missing!!

Anyone know how dependable the V10 is? It sounds like its got the ***** I'm looking for hauling, but I want to know about it's reliability including economy (ie fuel mileage).

There have been some block cracking issues with the cast iron Dodge V10
reported on forums...more than with the v8s but not so many as to be a great worry.
There have also be block cracking issues with some of the Cummins I6 diesels from the foundary in Brazil a few years ago.
It always is worth repeating that the key to successful towing
is stopping in emergency situations
not engine power to go fast.

diesel = more power
diesel = better gas mileage
do the math on how much you drive the gas savings might just give you motivation to get a diesel.
next time i will!!!!
1000 miles a month @12 mpg (5.2 not towing) @ $3.15 per gallon (ny) = $262.50
1000 miles a month @20 mpg (cummins not towing) @ 3.59per gal (ny) = $179.50
difference $83 a month
x 12 months
996 per year
get the diesel keep it for a couple years and it pays for itself and will hold its value much better than a gas motor

Forget wasting your time on the last post. I'm not seriously considering the 5.7. I was just trying to get all the info. ,you know? Okay, so what about a 2500 with a 5.9? Sounds like a decent combination. Anyone out there using it for hauling? As well, what kind of commuter mileage do you get?

I drove a friend of mines 2500 with V10 with a heavy trailer, it pulled real nice. It's defiantly not like his new Cummins. I was told the V10 was getting 16-18 MPG daily no problem.It just all comes down to what you can find that is in good condition and for a fair price.
